WELCOME TO THE LATCHFORD ALBION WEBSITE - WHERE RUGBY LEAGUE BEGINS, DEVELOPS AND ENDURES

Jimmy Griffiths

It is with immense sadness that we learned of the passing of a former Latchford Albion great, Jimmy Griffiths.

Jimmy finally succombed to prostrate cancer on 5th November 2004 at the age of 77 years. He goes to join his late wife Rosemary.

Jimmy is often remembered for just one game in the many that he played for Latchford. Usually a second row forward he was switched to right wing for a game played at Wilderspool on 6th February 1954. The reason was to keep in check the young Wigan player - Billy Boston.

It was shown to be an inspirational ploy and those who were there will surely never forget when, following a scrum near the Wigan line, Billy Foden got the ball quickly out to the right where Jimmy not only beat both Boston and 'Gentleman' Jack Cunliffe, but let them feel his full weight as he sent them both into touch and put the ball down near the corner for a great try.

Jimmy Griffiths lived in the Latchford area all his life and worked for Warrington Borough Council as a motor mechanic after two years National Service.
Jimmy was still a regular at training on Victoria Park long after his playing days were over. He and his great pal Johnny Hardiman used to have a move they would deploy during games of touch rugby that they called the 'tater pie'. Jim once answered the obvious question about the name and replied "Because we always make a hash of it"!

A Service to mark his passing was held on 17th November at Walton Lea, followed by a cremation.

Rest in Peace Jimmy Griff
