20 Dec 2007 - More awards for Unicorns

Congratulations to Latchford Albion Unicorns' Mark Smith for being selected in the BARLA Great Brtain Under 18's train-on squad ahead of a proposed tour to New Zealand in 2008.

Also named is former Unicorn Ste Fisher who was an integral member of our successful Under 16 side of 2005-06, which won the Lancashire Cup. Due to it's success and with players signing professional the squad disbanded but Steve, like several of his team mates, joined neighbours Rylands Sharks and has continued his development.

Additionally we've just learnt that Liam Kennedy has been called up for the trials, too. Liam joined us as an Under 16 last season and travels all the way from North Wales. He has continued to develop and, despite the break up of his own age group's team, Liam stayed loyal to the club and has been turning out for our Under 18's. This is a tremendous reward for his efforts.

Liam and Smithy's Under 18 Latchford coach, Andy Wood, has been appointed as assistant coach for the GB side.
Also in the news this week: -

Our all conquering U16's of 2006-07 were nominated as Warrington Sports Personality Under 16 team of 2007. They were pipped for the award by the Lymm High School Under 15 Rugby Union side who won the Daily Mail National Cup at Twickernham. Even so there were Unicorn winners as among the Lymm squad in the shape of Tom Wood who was played for our U15's last season and Phil Atherton who has been with us since Under 9's and has 176 games as a Unicorn to date and is still going strong.

The Warrington Sports Personality of 2007 judges have now revealed the finalists in five of the senior awards. In the running for Coach of the Year is our coaching co-ordinator Sean Mellor. Along with Jon Mitchell, Sean coached the successful U16 side of 2006 to be the first Warrington side win the U16 Lancashire Cup and produce Wolves first teamers Mike Cooper and Lee Mitchell. Sean then worked alongside Boby Hall to coach the 2007 U16 side that won the Premier League and Lancashire Cup and had six players sign on with professional clubs. He also has a remarkable record of coaching unbeaten side at various age groups with teh Warrington Service Area.

The 2007 Unsung Hero category sees our own John Wilkinson among the contenders. Wilkie is currently the Unicorns treasurer and merchandising guru. He has just volunteered to take over as fixture secretary from the departing Stuart McIntosh. John worked in a voluntary capacity as Warrington Service Area Co-ordinator this year. A role that is now performed professionally but for which John did out of the goodness of his heart. He aso manages to fit in coaching duties for the Under 13 Unicorns who are vying for the Premiership title and have reached two cup semi finals in teh last two years.

Finally the whole Youth section have been nominated in the category of Club of the Year. Not wshing to rest on it's laurels after a survey showed us officially what we already knew - that we are the best youth Rugby League set up in the district but we have since taken under our wing the Warrington Ladies and irls teams, thus fulfillng Stuart McIntosh's proposed Clubmark long-term plan considerably earlier than expected. The youth section will be represented by our secretary Steve Phillips at a glitzy awards ceremony next year.
