29 Mar 2007 - Latchford U16s at the double
Latchford U16s at the Double.
After securing the Lancashire Cup less than a fortnight ago, Latchford U16s are Champions of the NWCounties Premier League following a wonderful 18-14 victory by Orrell St James' over title contenders Wigan St Patrick's. A St Pat's victory would have seen the trophy presented to them tonight. Instead, this object of so much desire remained in its Tesco bag under the protective custody of the redoubtable Hilary Steel, as Orrell St James were successful in their determination to end their own season on a high, much to the relief of the Latchford contingent. On Tuesday Latchford completed their own League campaign with a convincing 26-6 win against the giants of Widnes Moorfield.
Orrell were delighted to have helped Latchford grab the title. Their obvious pleasure showed the affection their players and staff have for the "Pinks", who are popularly regarded as most people's second favourite team (after their own).
The Orrell efforts contrasted with the Blackbrook decision to gift 4 points to Wigan St Pats and ensured that the climax to this tremendous season will not be tainted by controversy.
The completion of the U16 season marks the end of an era for many teams as
professional call-ups ensure that the groups of players who have performed together, often for many years, in their various teams are forever altered. Everyone involved with Latchford U16s sincerely hopes that all their friends and rivals, and friendly rivals, continue to derive enormous pleasure from Rugby League irrespective of their playing standard. After their efforts on our behalf, this sentiment applies especially to our friends from Orrell St James.
