8 Jan 2007 - New Unicorn professionals
Latchford Albion Unicorns are proud to announce that two of its current successful Under Sixteens side have put pen to paper and signed their first professional Rugby League contracts.
Full back Kallum Watkins has spent the last weekend on National duty and, as he wasn't on any club scholarship scheme, Super League club Leeds decalred an interest and have now signed him onto their books. Kallum joined Latchford from Folly Lane and made his debut at home to Wigan St Patricks in October 2005.
Stand off Joe Mellor has been at Latchford since the formation of the Unicorns in 1998. Having helped Latchford reach the finals of the North West Counties Cup in 2003 and 2005, last year was his most successful. In 2006 his team won the NWC Cup, finished runners up in the U15 premiership and made it through to the U16's Lancashire Cup. Not only that but he also appeared for his country as well. Joe has attracted the interest of several of the top clubs and is delighted to have put pen to paper to sign for Brian Noble's Wigan.
We at Latchford are delighted for both and are very appreciative of the fabulous way both clubs have encouraged both players to finish their club committments with the Unicorns as the U16's not only strive to win the Lancashire cup but also make a serious bid for the premiership title. With such a talented team assembled and marshalled by Bobby Hall and Sean Mellor there can be no doubt that other players among their squad will be snapped up professionally soon.
