6 Aug 2006 - A season review

Latchford Albion Unicorns' was formed in May 1998 and from such humble beginnings we are naturally proud of what has been achieved over the past seven years.

This past season has been particularly rewarding for all those volunteers and children who come together under the banner of Latchford Albion's Youth Section.
We have welcomed into the fold the remnants of our neighbours Grappenhall Giants and, in order to preserve their good name we fielded a Giants team at U11 and 12's. That meant we were able to register eleven teams and by the close of the season had registered over 240 youngsters.

Cups and glory has never been the driving force behind this club but it is always pleasing when your endeavours yield such success.

Our Lancashire Cup winning U16's squad were not able to move up to U18's at the beginning of the campaign after so many had been taken up by the Warrington Wolves.

Our U16's, 14's and 13's were placed in the first divisions of their respective age groups and each consolidated that position. Our U15's finished runners up in their Premier Division and won the NWC Cup when they beat the much-fancied Blackbrook Royals. 2006 was also a notable year for stand off Joe Mellor who was selected for the national team.

Our U12 Giants celebrated their first season with us by winning the NWC Development Cup. Unfortunately our Unicorns U12's missed out at the semi-final stage when they met the Giants, otherwise it could easily have been Latchford v Latchford in the final.

We now have 39 representative players on books from U11 upwards, with 2 U14's and 8 U15's recently selected for the Regional camp, while Danny Brown and Mark Smith from our U16's have been taken up by Warrington Wolves. Congratulations go to the eight U15's who have been selected for Regional Camp - Jack Cooper, Ashley Cornelia, Jack Davies, Matty Lomax, Joe Mellor, Tom Rigby, Richard Taylor and Kallum Watkins. Also to both our U14 SA representative players who have been selected for Regional Camp - John Hewitt and Adam Yates-Dutton.

It?s appropriate that we finish this brief review celebrating the recent Super League debut of Michael Cooper who scored for the Wolves at Castleford in July and then captained the Lancashire U17 team a month later.

We all aim to build upon these successes for the 2006-07 season.
