29 Aug 2005 - Co-op Boost to RL Development

At 11.00am on Sunday, September 18th, some 7,000 young Rugby League players at thirty-four venues across the country, aged between 7 and 11yrs will be kicking off in simultaneous Festivals.

It will mark the launch of a three-year programme designed to increase and enhance participation in the game of Rugby League.

United Co-operatives, the biggest regional Co-operative Society in the UK, has joined forces with the RFL to bring together a programme of festivals, coaching, equipment, education and resources all aimed at increasing participation in what is already a very popular sector of the game.

In addition, the programme has benefited from a 'Sportsmatch' Award, part of the Government's Grass Roots Sports Sponsorship Scheme, which will allow the programme to double in size and reach 12,000 young people in the coming three years.

The U8's Festival will take place at Victoria Park, while the U9's are at Rylands Sharks, U10's at Crosfield Cobras and U11's at Woolston Rovers.

In conjunction with the sponsors, and at the same time as the rest of the mini and mod playing associations in the country, the Festival will take place at various venues simultaneously, thus billing it as the largest festival of any sport.

In the North West area the festival is divided, as far as possible, into geographical areas, the main purpose of this is to make it a manageable event.

Clubs have been allocated into area groups and each area has a host club for an age group. If you have a team in a particular age group you send them to the host for that age group. Latchford Albion Unicorns are the hosts for the U8's. Any U7's will also come to Latchford. This is fortunate as officially marked out pitches with posts are not required, simply coned off pitches.

The synchronised kick off is scheduled for 11.00am. This may have a knock on effect for older teams. Indeed some hosts have asked for a postponement of their older team fixtures for that date (our U16's game at Rylands is one such postponement).

Our U15's are due to play at Thatto Heath Crusaders who are hosts of U9's in that area. Our U14's are due to be at home to Eccles & Salford Juniors and U13's at home to Leyland Warriors. With a home like Victoria Park and the use of Loushers Lane there should be no real reason for us to cancel our home fixtures unless directed to do so by the league. We do not know at this time where our two U12's teams are scheduled to play.

In our geographical group are the following clubs: -
Latchford Albion Unicorns & Giants, Rylands Sharks, Crosfields Cobras, Woolston Rovers, Newton Storm, Weaverham, Burtonwood Bulldogs, Culcheth Eagles.

The U9's of this group of clubs are to be hosted by Rylands Sharks. The U10's are at Crosfields Cobras and the U11's (Unicorns & Giants) are at Woolston Rovers.

It is not known at this time if those clubs have teams at each and every age group or whether any have U7's or more than one team at an age group. That should be clearer after the NWC 8-12's meeting on 6th September. It is also not know if we are expected to provide after-match refreshments.

Teams are invited to turn up in good time and find the co-ordinator of the day. At Latchford that will be our secretary Andy WOOD. Information of other co-ordinators will be available at the September meeting that I am to attend.

Once the number of teams has been declared or are present then the playing format can be finalised. Our gala programe provided suggested playing times etc but it is suggested by the NWC that all games will be of one half of a period of time, which when accumulated, will NOT exceed the maximum playing time for a child in any one day.
