22 Aug 2005 - Congratulations to Mike Cooper
The England Academy Under 17 Squad who will take on the Australian Institute of Sport in November has been named and it includes former Unicorn, Michael Cooper.
The last time the AIS toured this country, they were decisively defeated in each of their two Internationals by the Academy, so revenge is likely high on their list of priorities this time round.
However, the England Academy selectors look to have picked an especially strong squad, including a quintet of young players to have already played in the engage
Super League this season. St. Helens' Scott Moore, Warrington Wolves' Chris Riley, Wigan Warriors' starlets Darrell Goulding and Sean Gleeson and Hull FC's Thomas Lee, have tasted the big time in 2005.
Included in the squad is Thomas Coyle, younger son of former Wigan scrum half Bernard Coyle. Thomas' elder brother, James, captained the England Academy when the AIS was defeated on their previous tour, and he is following what is rapidly becoming a family tradition in wearing the cherry and white of the Wigan Warriors.
The team's Head Coach will be former Hull FC, Leeds, Castleford and Great Britain star Lee Crooks, whose assistant will be Basil Richards, the ex-Huddersfield and Warrington forward currently on the coaching staff of the Bradford Bulls; while team manager will be Mike Rush of St. Helens.
The selectors have named a 24-man squad, which will be trimmed to a playing strength of 20 following a warm-up game to be played in November.
The full squad comprises seven players from Wigan Warriors with half a dozen from St. Helens, four from Warrington Wolves, three from Leeds Rhinos and one each from the Bradford Bulls, Huddersfield Giants, Hull FC and Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, as follows (in alphabetical order):
James Archibald of Leeds Rhinos
Sam Burgess of Bradford Bulls
Paul Clough of St Helens
Danny Colquitt of Warrington Wolves
Michael Cooper of Warrington Wolves
Thomas Coyle of Wigan Warriors
Leroy Cudjoe of Huddersfield Giants
Kyle Eastmond of St Helens
Dale Ferguson of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats
Chris Frodsham of St Helens
Sean Gleeson of Wigan Warriors
Darrell Goulding of Wigan Warriors
Michael Haley of Leeds Rhinos
Ben Harrison of Warrington Wolves
Dean Hatton of Wigan Warriors
Ben Kavanagh of Wigan Warriors
Thomas Lee of Hull FC
Dean McGilvray of St Helens
Michael McIllorum of Wigan Warriors
Scott Moore of St Helens
Craig Rennison of Wigan Warriors
Chris Riley of Warrington Wolves
Steven Tyrer of St Helens
Joe Walsh of Leeds Rhinos
