U11 2007-08

23/09/2007 v Hindley (away)
Hindley U11 - 46
Latchford Albion Unicorns U11 - 12

A fantastic and very determined effort by Latchford wasn't enough to win them the game, but they showed a tremendous amount of character in both attack and defence. There was a period in the first half when Latchford managed to keep Hindley scoreless for a period of intense pressure that Hindley put on the Latchford line. Latchford however did get over the try line twice, through some sloppy defending and some quick thinking from Lewis Fry, with both trys converted Lewis converted his 1st try and Jordan Hickey converted Lewis' second try.

A lot of the points Hindley scored weren't through bad defending the tries were scored when they broke the line and Latchford couldn't just scramble back to make the covering tackle. Overall Latchford put their heart and soul in and came out all smiling and they know deep within themselves that they are not far off getting that win?.

30/09/2007 v Milnrow (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U11 - 6
Milnrow U11 - 30

Latchford, a team that were short on numbers but high on pride, showed they can play some decent Rugby. Although the first half wasn't much to go by as Latchford conceded the majority of their points in the first half through breaks down the outside of the field by Milnrow.

The second half was much more respectable, and Latchford managed to get on the score sheet through some great ball movement and then Rhys Murphy crashing over from close range. Rhys, also converting his own try. Latchford showed a lot of grit, determination and lots of passion, that showed they want to get that 1st win by tackling their hearts out and restricting Milnrow to just one second half try.

Overall when they start passing the ball out and staying on the player they are marking then they will get that 1st win because everything else will click into place.

07/10/2007 v Westhoughton Lions (away)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U11 - 18
Westhoughton Lions U11 - 42

Another determined second half from Latchford made the score line look very respectable after Latchford had started slowly in the first half. Latchford did get on the score sheet in the first half through quick thinking from Lewis Fry who spotted a gap in the Westhoughton defence and picked their pockets by helping himself to a quick Try. Lewis also managed to convert his own Try.

The second half started the same as the first with Westhoughton getting on the score sheet not through any form of skill but through sheer force sending their big guy forward and punching holes through the Latchford line. However the second half slightly swung Latchford's way when they started getting a lot more of the ball and using it to good effect. The breakthrough came again with some more quick thinking from Lewis Fry managed to bag him another Try as he went through a gap that you could fit a Tank through. With William converting Lewis second Try. Then, towards the end of the game, arguably the Try of the match from Jordan Hickey who got some quick ball, put on his dancing shoes went through a gap and carried on the move he had started with Jordan touching down rightly after starting the move. Overall another determined effort with Latchford playing in the right frame of mind and pushing their opponents all the way. Back to top
14/10/2007 v Pilkington Recs (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U11 - 0
Pilkingtons Recs U11 - 38

Another fantastic effort by Latchford didn't get them to the top of the mountain and that first win, but it showed what they can do when they work as team. Although Latchford didn't score a Try, they can take great heart in the way they game was played and how much more they developed and worked hard. Latchford showed a lot of good touches and showed they can move the ball forward and put pressure on the opposition. Although the score line suggests that the game was a 1 way affair, this couldn't be further from the truth as Pilkingtons were made to work hard for their Tries and a lot of Pilkingtons Try were from broken play where they used a bit of speed to get away from the on coming defence. Again Latchford we just need to concentrate for longer and play two halves of Rugby.

21/10/2007 v Rochdale Mayfield (away)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U11 - 0
Rochdale Mayfield U11 - 38

Another superb second half from Latchford showed what they could do when they put their minds to things. The first half started off slowly where Mayfield weren't really scoring any superb tries, these tries just came through gaps in the Latchford defence, where their bigger players just run through.

In the second half it was a totally different story Latchford re assessed their goals and started to put pressure on in attack and defence, with Jordan Hickey nearly scoring before being bundled into touch, and then a bit later on Matthew Grimshaw nearly scoring in the corner only to be denied by not putting the ball down correctly under pressure from the Mayfield defence. Overall Latchford showed true determination and character, and showed what they can do when they set their minds to it. Latchford are definitely going in the right direction with each and every player developing and coming off the field with a smile on their face.

28/10/2007 v Crosfield Cobras (away)
Crosfield Cobras U11 - 48
Latchford Albion Unicorns U11 - 0

A short away journey across Warrington found us at Crosfields. It was a very interesting game, and although Latchford didn't score a Try they worked really hard and developed really strongly. None of Crosfields' Tries came from any spectacular sort of play it was just a lot of one man Rugby on the fringes (wings) and down the middle from broken play. Although Latchford lost the game they came out of the game with high morale and all the team felt really positive. Latchford have got a bit of developing to do but as long as they stick together and work for 1 another, they will come good very soon.

04/11/2007 v Bank Quay Bulls (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U11 - 6
Bank Quay Bulls U11 - 26

Latchford showed a very resolute and very determined performance as they took on Bank Quay Bulls. In the first half Bank Quay scored a couple of Tries just through brief lapses in the Latchford line of defence. But after that Latchford dominated possession and retained ball and put a lot of pressure on the Bank Quay defence and were unlucky not to go over the line a few times with Lewis Fry being held up twice, and also just dropping the ball from the impact of the tackle as he was going over the line.

Early in the second half through to the sheer pressure that was put on The Bank Quay line Lewis Fry managed to delve over the TRY line to get Latchford on the score sheet, and he also managed to convert his own TRY. Latchford showed pure grit and determination throughout the game in what was arguably 1 of the best performances of the season so far and if they play like that every week that 1st win will be just around the corner. Although the score line says Latchford lost the performance shows they are on the right track and can put in a great performance.

11/11/2007 v Halton Farnworth Hornets (away)
Halton Farnworth Hornets U11 - 34
Latchford Albion Unicorns U11 - 0

Latchford may not have won the game, but they showed a lot of passion throughout the game. Even when things were looking bleak Latchford were still in there really plugging away and making some fantastic tackles. Latchford showed that they could make some big tackles and although not scoring they showed some good movement with the ball and also some quick thinking especially from Rhys Murphy who managed to intercept the ball through some great vision. The whole team all made a difference today with some fantastic tackles and some real grit and some real determination.

18/11/2007 v Langworthy Reds (away)
Langworthy Reds U11 - 26
latchford Albion Uncorns U11 - 4

Another inspired performance by an ever growing and ever improving Latchford side. This performance gave Latchford and its supporters real ground for optimism, in future games. Latchford showed they could hold their and really got stuck into Langworthy. Latchford had plenty of chances in the first half to dive over the try line but just could not complete their sets. Latchford also put in plenty of fantastic tackles and really showed Langworthy they were in a game. Langworthy scored their tries through a couple of missed tackles, these tries were not as spectacular as Latchford's only score.

The flood gates opened late in the 2nd half both sides were low on energy and the ball was offloaded by Kieran Stanger to Jordan Hickey, who danced and pushed his way through the would be Langworthy tacklers to dive in for what was a fantastic try scored right at the end of the game which topped off a fantastic all round Latchford performance.

25/11/2007 v Portico Vine (away)
Portico Vine U11 - 52
Latchford Albion Unicorns U11 - 10

A very credible performance by a vastly improving Latchford side, didn't give them a win but they showed some fantastic spirit and played he game in the right way. All throughout the game Latchford put up a determined attack and just feel short on a couple of occasions not being able to convert their chances.

In the second half though Latchford got their act together and managed to bag a couple off superb Tries. The first coming from William Garside, this happened literally seconds after the second half started, with the move coming from an absolutely awesome kick off from Lewis Fry who landed the ball into touch from the kick off. The scrum was formed and the scene was set Lewis fed the ball through the scrum, picked the ball up and was just tackled a few meters short of the line, and then the ball was given out to William who through sheer power and determination managed to get himself over the line and put the ball down. The second Try came courtesy of Lewis Fry who put in an absolutely bizarre low kick, the ball bounced everywhere causing mayhem and confusion amongst the Portico defence and in the midst of the confusion like a passing fog Lewis Fry appeared and managed to touch the ball down. Lewis also managing to convert his own Try.

02/12/2007 v Wigan St Cuthbert's (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U11 - 0
Wigan St Cuthbert's U11 - 32

Although the score shows Latchford lost the match, the game was well in the balance with a really superb and passionate performance from the ever growing Latchford side. The whole team deserve praise although they didn?t score Latchford showed they could certainly put some pressure on the opposition and put some fantastic tackles in that would be worthy of Super league match. Latchford also had the weather to contend with, the wind made it difficult for Acting Half Backs Elliot Fry and Matthew Grimshaw to direct the passes to the relevant players. The score may say nil but the effort of Latchford was there to see and very evident right throughout the match, if Latchford play like that again they will definitely be line for big things very soon.

06/01/2008 v Blackpool Scorpions (away)

Blackpool Scorpions U11's - 44

Latchford Albion Unicorns U11's - 22

Latchford resumed after the enforced winter break and showed that 2008 might be the year when the team begins to click and show on the pitch the development that is apparent in training sessions. This game saw the team register more points on the board than in any other game this season. Latchford replied to an early Blackpool score with Jordan Hickey running in a try from ten metres out having evaded several would-be tacklers. A Blackpool playing guesting for the Unicorns managed to score after good movement down the Latchford right. Quick thinking close to the line from William Gartside who burrowed through the defensive line to score and keep Latchford in the game.

After the break Lewis Fry had the presence of mind on the last tackle to not give the ball away cheaply and loose ground but shouldered responsibility and weaved his way to the line to score. Brilliant inter-play between Fry and Hickey saw the latter receive a short pass and go on to touch down before adding the extras himself. Simon Knox enjoyed a fine game edging out many team mates for the player's player award.

27/01/2008 v Hindley (away)

Hindley U11 - 16

Latchford Albion Unicorns U11 - 12

This was an absolutely scintillating and arguably the best performance of Latchford’s season nearly brought Latchford their 1st win. This was an exciting end to end game and absolutely fantastic for a neutral to watch. Latchford matched Hindley in every department and were very unlucky not to win the game. The 1st TRY for Latchford came from Lewis Fry, with some quick from dummy half on the last tackle to drive over from close range. Latchford's 2nd TRY came late in the half; this again came from Lewis Fry. A penalty was given and before anyone could think, as soon as the whistle blew Lewis managed to spot a gap wide enough to fit a tank through and made he most of the gap and dived over.

Arguably the best TRY of the match came from some unselfish play and some very quick think, Matt Grimshaw took the ball at 1st receiver and all the defence was over one side Matt spotted this run right along on the angle managed to create a gap and got over the TRY line, and in a piece of unselfish play found Rhys Murphy there in support and handed Rhys the ball so he could dive over the line to score the TRY. If Latchford had about 2 extra minutes in what was an absolutely fantastic and breathe taking game of Rugby they could have quite easily got the draw or even the illusive 1st win.

Latchford played an amazing game against Golborne.  Although they were defeated 16-38 Latchford showed a massive improvement throughout the game and at one stage had a chance to take the lead as they were only 2 points behind.  Lewis fry scoring all 3 tries, he had an excellent game and took away the Man of the Match Award along with the Top tackler Award.  Elliot fry and Rhys Murphy scored both the conversions.  Other awards went to Simon Knox for Top Tackler, Elliot Fry and Matthew Grimshaw who both received the Players Player Award. Well done to all who played in this very nail biting game

Crosfield Cobras U11 38

Latchford Albion Unicorns U11 0

This was a very tough game and not only at time were Latchford battling against Crosfields they were also battling against the referee. Latchford didn’t manage to cross the whitewash but came close several times, and showed some great determination in defence and attack. Latchford showed some good signs and played some very good rugby at times, not once did they let their heads drop, and they kept on plugging away at the game even though the score was out of their reach. They say good things comes to those who wait, well Latchford you don’t have to wait much longer you are due to do some good things.

09/03/2008 v Bank Quay Bulls (away)

Bank Quay Bulls U11 – 38

Latchford Albion Unicorns U11 – 16

Latchford played a really hard fought game and although the score suggests Bank Quay ran away with the game, Latchford worked really hard and came up with some good tries in the process. Even though Latchford seemed to be battling different elements within the game, they put their heart and soul into the game and give a good account of themselves. Latchford scored three fantastic tries, the first coming from some quick thinking at dummy half from Lewis Fry who managed to dive over in the tightest of corners to touch down. Lewis also kicked over the conversion. Lewis scored the second when, on the 5th tackle, he decided not to kick the ball but to run with the ball throwing a fantastic dummy and then racing in at the corner. The third try came from Jordan Hickey, sloppy play at the base of the scrum led to a differential penalty being given to Latchford because Bank Quay were caught offside. On the last tackle quick hands across the field led to the ball finding Jordan Hickey who shrugged off the would be Bank Quay tacklers to race in at the corner and then converting. The way Latchford played should give them great encouragement to keep plugging away because there was some very good rugby played today and some very enthusiastic defensive work being carried out, Latchford we are not far off.
