U9 2007-08

23/09/2007 v Thatto Heath Crusaders (away)
Thatto Heath Crusaders U9 - 40
Latchford Albion Unicorns U9 - 20

A great start to this 2007-2008 North West Counties season with some very impressive rugby on show. As the first game of the season started it was end-to-end rugby with both teams working hard in defence and the skill of all in attack that helped to gain the field position for the trys for the team. First half trys were made by (Road runner) Charlie Mercer, (Speedy) Danny Hickman, (Handoff) Ellis Ditchfield and (quick step) Sam Graham the Unicorns went in five trys to four at half time.

The second half saw the Thatto Heath interchange eight players with the Unicorns interchanging three but still the standard of rugby carried on throughout this entire game. Second half try was made by Charlie Mercer. A big well done to all the players.
Player of the match was Ellis Ditchfield, the best tackler was Charlie Mercer and the Coach award went to Nathan Brettle

30/09/2007 v Wigan St Patrick's (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U8 -12
Wigan St Patricks U9 - 44

Some very entertaining skills were on show in this game. The first half saw some excellent Rugby League with side-stepping and strong running although the Unicorns were overcome by a fast attacking St Pats team who then started to dominate field position. The Unicorns were unable to reset their defence quickly, with their biggest downfall being in defence. As true Latchford Unicorns they pushed on to the end and they all still enjoyed their Sunday morning exertions. The first half try was scored by (Tricky) Mikey Syres who dummied from acting half leaving the St Pats team stood still. Second half trys were scored by (Rapid) Rony Frank who used his speed and sprinted down the wing for a great try and then by (Speedy) Danny Hickman who powered through the defence from a scoot and headed low for the try line for another great try.

A big thanks to David Outen Powergen Referee and also the new up and coming referee Tim Galsworthy for their great control during this match. Player of the match was Danny Hickman, Best tackler was Mark Sturman, Sponsors Award went to Rony Frank and Coaches award went to James Mercer.

14/10/2007 v Widnes Moorfield (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U9 - 12
Widnes Moorfield U9 - 16

This match today was on the back of a late night from the team outing to Old Trafford to watch the super league grand final. This didn't effect the Unicorns as this was very entertaining to watch as the Unicorns put a great display of rugby league with alot of skills on show from both teams. As the game commenced it didn't look like any of the teams was going to hit the score sheet until road runner (Charlie Mercer) took the ball at super speed and broke the line leaving him a 40 meter sprint for the in-goal as this was the Unicorns only try during the first half due to a few controversial decisions as Mikey Syres and James Mercer was denied fine try's in the corners they went in at half time 4-4. Second half of this tense game of quick play the balls, speed running, drop offs, line passing, and great defence this game was the best performance of the season for the Unicorns so far with (speedy) Danny Hickman taking on the full Widnes Moorfield pack and out stepping every one in sight landing him in the in-goal. second try of the second half was made by (Road runner) Charlie Mercer who collected a drop off from Speedy and broke through the widnes defence line sliding in under the sticks. From todays efforts all the team must be mentioned and I'm sure there will be greater times to come although they still enjoy there day whether they win or loose and are true Unicorns.
Keep up the great work !
Player of the match was Morgan Adawee, Best tackler of the match was Mikey Syres, Coaches most improved player award was Joe Adawee, And the sponsors trophy was awarded to Danny Hickman.

Oldham St Annes U9 - 24
Latchford Albion Unicorns U9 -36

With the blazing sun shining down on the Unicorns on this glorious day in Oldham with a superb game of rugby league and recording their first win of the season. As the whistle sounded the Unicorns switched into full steam ahead and their great rugby skills were on show for all to see. With the full effort by all the team they was able to gain countless field position metres with lots of strong running from Nathan Brettle, Alex Byrne, (Handoff) Ellis Ditchfield, (Rapid) Rony Frank, and (Sonic) James Mercer, these players didn't reach the score sheet but played a big part in this game for their team mates to score. The first try was made by (speedy) Danny Hickman who used his wonderfull stepping ability to dash and dart through the Oldham defence. A second try came when (Tricky) Mikey Syres darted from acting half and twisted and turned in the tackle landing in the in-goal he also put in some great shots in defence. A third try was made by Sam Graham who throughout this match broke through Oldham's defence with his ability to collect the ball from acting half at speed and this time he landed in the in-goal. The fourth try of the first half was made by (Shabba) Morgan Adawee who used his sprinting ability and his crisp footwork together with flash lighting speed to out step the Oldham in coming defence to land him in the in-goal. The Unicorns went in at half time 16-8 up.

The second half was very exciting to watch as all the players knew what they had to do with full concentration throughout the remainder of the game. All the Unicorns were trying their hardest with (Road Runner) Charlie Mercer scoring a big five try haul in his excellent second half play mounted on his many skills with his running and collecting the ball at super speeds. There was only one other try in the second half which was made by Sam Graham who, as mentioned previously, had a outstanding strong run bursting through the Oldham defence and sprinted forty metres to land for a fine try. Player of the match was Charlie Mercer and Rony Frank collected the sponsors award, Alex Byrne took the Coaches most improved player award and Sam Graham was awarded the top tackler of the match.

Latchford opened the score with a strong sole effort from Sam Graham who as allways runs at speed and he burst through the Portico defence with all his power to which landed him a fine try. (Shabba) Morgan Adawee was next for his two try haul one after each other with his amazing stepping footwork attracting defenders and then bouncing back the other way his effort granted him the two try's today. The next two trys came from (Road Runner) Charlie Mercer who as allways loads the ball at super speed from acting half with this on one of his many hatricks he broke through the Portico Defence leaving him a thirty meter sprint finishing sliding for the try line. Second half still shown no difference as the Unicorns listened to the team talk at half time and then improved even more in defence still as true Unicorns they were not going to give in today and even though some may not have reached the score sheet the following players gained field position today for there team mates to score, Nathan Brettle who took the ball north with his strong build and power running, (Sonic) James mercer who just missed out on a try with his running speed and put in some great defence work today he had the best game of the season so far, Alex Byrne also taking the ball in and gaining meters for his team he also worked hard in defence, Mark Sturman was also an influential player today with his Strong running and solid defence, Joe Adawee was also solid in defence and put in great runs for trys to be scored, (Handoff) Ellis Ditchfield was also high in the stats for his defence effort he also put in some great runs. the first Try to be scored in this half was made by lewis harmer who sprinted at speed for the corner with all of the portico team trying to tackle him he slid for the in-goal for a fine try. Next try came from (Tricky) Mikey Syres who used his step at speed and out stepped the Portico defence he then ran on the angle for the touch line and sprinted down the wing sliding in the in-goal for a fine try. This try completed our (Road Runner) Charlie Mercer's hatrick today with his strong run from the Portico try line and sprinted the full length of the pitch at full speed and then sliding in for a fine try. Lewis Harmer was next to be put on the score sheet as he used all his power to race through a gap and leave the Portico defence standing he then touched the ball down for a fine try. 04/11/2007 v West Bank Bears (away)
West Bank Bears U9 - 16
Latchford Albion Unicorns U9 - 24

Another great Sunday for the Unicorns ! In this match there was a superb defence effort from all the players as they defended back to back sets on there own line to which tested there character today as it looked like that this game was going to be pointless.(Tricky) Mikey Syres was first to hit the score sheet with his clever stepping from a quick play the ball from a scoot, Second try taken by (Road Runner) Charlie Mercer who again used his power speed and a great step to break the Bears defence when camped down on the Bears try line and ran the full length of the pitch. Next try to be made was by Sam Graham who used his great strength and his stepping ability combined with his speed he also ran the full length when the Unicorns were camped down in there own half. The Unicorns went in at half time 4-12 up.

As the second half Started the Unicorns with only one substitute and the West Bank team interchanging with there nineteen man team they still didn't let that put them off and carried on playing some impressive Rugby League with a great team effort especially in defence and when in attack there was some excellent skills on show and was the highlight of the week. First second half try was made by Rony Frank who ran with all his speed attracted the Bears defence then used his great step and then headed down the middle heading north for the try line. Next try was by (Road Runner) Charlie Mercer who sprinted onto the ball and turned in the tackle which broke the defence free as he used all his power to land in the in-goal. The final try of of this amazing game came from (Shabba) Morgan Adawee who used his speed and his great footwork combined with his wriggle style play which defenders find hard to contain and on this time it landed him a great try. There was also a controversial decision by the referee in this half. All Unicorns must be mentioned as there was countless meters made by those who didn't reach the score sheet. 11/11/2007 v Wigan St Jude's (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U9 - 8
Wigan St Judes U9 - 28

As the Unicorns turned up this morning with there intention of enjoying their day the team started with the warm up and before kick off they all showed great respect during the minute silence. As the whistle went to start this match with the unbeaten Wigan St Judes team this was for all to see in no doubt a tough encounter today ! Still there was no off putting from the Unicorns as they allways pushed forward and as the big wigan pack pushed forward the Unicorns most of the time contained there efforts. In this first half there was two try's made by (Road Runner) Charlie Mercer who on countless times broke the wigan defence with his ability to blast through on the back of a quick play the ball at an astonishing speed. Still this game was a very close one as the Unicorns went in at half time 8-12 down.

In the second half there was still momentum going forwards from the Unicorns but the defence slightly dropped off in this even tougher half and Wigan St Judes were able to score a five try haul and still the Unicorns toughed this out. Player of the match was Charlie Mercer sponsors award went to Nathan Brettle coaches award went to Ellis Ditchfield and the tackler of the match was Rony Frank.

25/11/2007 v Leigh East (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U9 - 24
Leigh East U9 - 24

Before this game commenced there was a minute silence for our former great Britain captain Mike Gregory and Latchford's number thirteen also was captain of the team respectively. The first half of the game started really slow and the Unicorns today were taken by surprise with the nearly new team from the previous season as the unicorns were struggling to contain the free flow of rugby with an even sized match which reflected the full time score. With this it took nearly a full half for the Unicorns to awake until ! (Road Runner) Charlie Mercer powered through on the back of great meters made by the team and then crashed over the try line Mikey Syres was next to hit the score sheet with a crafty dummy from acting half on the back of a quick play the ball and a dive for the try line. Third try to hit the sheet was again made by Charlie Mercer who burst straight through the Leigh defence leaving them standing while he raced forty meters for his try.
In this penalty ridden second half with the Leigh East side being pulled on mostly every tackle for a high shot which resulted with two injured Unicorn players with neck injuries.
Still this tough bunch of Unicorns went on to score more try's with (Speedy) Dan Hickman out pacing the Leigh side and ran round the defence to score in the corner he also had a try disallowed by the referee. The next two try's came from (Road Runner) Charlie Mercer who during this game put his all in and played to his best ability to which lands him quite often in the in-goal. Player of the match was Charlie Mercer the tackler of the match was Lewis Harmer the sponsors trophy was awarded to Mikey Syres and the Coaches award went to Dan Hickman.

02/12/2007 v Langworthy Reds (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U9 -24
Langworthy Reds U9 -24

In this fine soft ground the teams were an even side today and this game was the in favour of the Unicorns in the first half of this very entertaining and skilled rugby from both sides. With the ever present Unicorn pack they all made hard yards forward giving the try scorers great opportunity to score. first and second trys in the first half was made by (speedy) Dan Hickman who as allways combines his speed with an outstanding step and in this game he scored another hatrick of try's. Next to hit the score sheet was James Mercer who was well on form today as he made a dart for a try and with his great speed and determination diving for the line landing in at the corner. The Unicorns were up 12-4 at half time.

Second half definatly proved this game was a game of two halfs and the Unicorns struggled to contain the Langworthy Reds team with there passing of the ball. Although they did switch of a little the first try of the second half was made by (speedy) Dan Hickman who attracted the defence down the middle and then out run running round the outside of the defence claiming his fine hatrick. The next two try's came from (tricky) Mikey Syres who used two power plays from scoots to smash through and score twice although the Langworthy team was running away with this game in the second half the Unicorns fought back there field position and this finalised the score locked at twenty four points each. Player of the match was Ellis Ditchfield the best tackler was Dan Hickman James Mercer collected the sponsors award and Sam Graham was awarded the coach award.

27/01/2008 v Thatto Heath Crusaders (home)

Latchford Albion Unicorns U9 -28

Thatto Heath U9 - 54

In this very entertaining game today the Unicorns took a full first half to get back into there usual playing mode this was due to the very long Christmas break. Still the team stuck together and pushed on through seeing some great sets with great meters made but they were unable to complete there sets with the first half seeing ten unanswered trys with (Tricky) Mikey Syres using his powerhouse skills from acting half to score twice in the first half. Leaving the score at half time 8-40

After the team talk at half time and a message from the captain Trick to say the score was "Nil Nil" the team all of a sudden sprung into action and from there on it was a great game to watch. Mikey Syres was first on the score sheet in the second half and proved to be un-stoppable close to the line. Next to score was Rony Frank who eventually broke free down the middle of the field as he pushed his way through sprinting for the in goal. (Shabba) Morgan Adawee was the next to score with his dummy pass that fooled all and a little jink from acting half and straight into the in-goal. (Road Runner) Charlie Mercer was next as he headed up north with a great hand off and super speed for a try. The last try was made by (Tricky) Mikey Syres who shot out of acting half twisted and turned in the tackle and scored on the line. All players must be mentioned as they all played a big part in getting towards there in-goal with some outstanding meters made we also seen Debut player Abby Wray play her first game ever. A big well done to you. Player of the match was Mikey Syres the best tackler of the game was Charlie Mercer while Rony Frank scooped the Sponsors Trophy and Dan Hickman collected the most improved player award.

03/02/2008 v Shevington Sharks (home)

Latchford Albion Unicorns U9 -12

Shevington Sharks U9 - 24

This fixture had to be reversed this weekend due to the snowfall in Shevington and was played at the Latchford sister pitch off Loushers lane. In this very entertaining game in the very high wind there was certainly some skilled play to see as the Unicorns started with the wind behind them both teams defence kept this game very close and could have gone either way. Still it was very entertaining to watch as both teams supporters joined together to applaud the kid's. First try to be made was by (Tricky) Mikey Syres who powered through from acting half going low for the line using his strength to push over. The Unicorns went into half time 12- 4.

Second half with the wind increased it was tough for the players out there in these conditions and there team effort was outstanding for a big part of this game. The first to score in this half was (Rapid) Rony Frank who took the ball from acting half on a angled run and headed for the wing where he put the gas on full and despite the two oncoming shark tacklers he managed to reach over his head and put the ball down. The next to score was Joe Adawee who took the ball from acting half with great hands and then went on an outstanding run using his strength to fend off six Shark tacklers as his determination carried him to Joe's first recorded try for Latchford Albion Unicorns. As the Unicorns are now heading towards the 08/09 season they leaded themselves around the park with no coach for sometime during this game today so a big well done to you all. Player of the match was Joe Adawee Sponsors award went to Rony Frank. Charlie Mercer collected the best tackler of the match and Abby Wray was awarded the most improved players coach award.

10/02/2008 v Leigh East (away)

Leigh East U9 's - 36

Latchford Albion Unicorns U9's - 28

As the Unicorns took the Pennington flash trail for there run out to Leigh East with a squad of ten due to illness still this didn't effect the team and they all had plans to enjoy there Sunday outing. This game today was played at a very high standard of Rugby League on a over sized 3G Pitch which wasn't an ideal playing surface for them and resulted in a accident book entry. As the game started the Unicorns were trying there best to keep the attacking side out until Leigh East hit the score sheet it was then the game started to flow with some great passing and off loading and quick play the balls and in no doubt this game was end to end Rugby League. First to make the Unicorns score sheet was (Tricky) Mikey Syres who was in great form today he went on to score four try's for the team two with power scoots and the other two with his driving power. Nathan Brettle also had a solid game with the first attempt to score a try failing but he went back to the same spot to amend his error and scored using his power and pumping legs carrying him over the line for a great try this was his first recorded try for Latchford. James Mercer led the field today and passed some great balls out for the great runs made. (Rapid Rony) Rony Frank was another player in good form today in attack and defence and used his great sprint speed to again running around the outside of the defenders scoring a fine try in the corner. Sam Graham another asset to this team he was also in fine form today and took the ball in with all he had with every ball today and on one of his line breaks he made it to the in-goal out doing he full back with his neat side step for a great try. All the team must be congratulated for there efforts for some great defence work and countless meters made in attack. Player of the match was Sam Graham Sponsors award went to Charlie Mercer, Mikey Syres scooped the tackler award and the most improved players’ honour went to Nathan Brettle.

17/02/2008 v Rochdale Mayfield Mustangs (home)

Latchford Albion Unicorns U9 - 28

Rochdale Mayfield Mustangs U9 - 8

The Unicorns claimed their first win of 2008 in style today after both teams waited patiently for the ground to defrost delaying kick off until 11:45. This was a great game to watch today as the Unicorns are now in control of there own game and achieved this with no coach on the field so a big well done to you all. As the stats read today there was a big defensive effort by all the Unicorns there was no letting go from start to finish and they defended countless sets from there own line and only one line break was taken by the Mustangs. In attack the Unicorns were always dominant and even seen drop off's line passes and off loads and great hard work to make the meters when camped down in there own half. First to register on the score sheet was Sam Graham who ran strong throughout the game today and on this occasion he used his neat step and speed to out do the Mustangs defence with a dive for the try line. Next to score was Charlie Mercer who was in outstanding form today in his now position of full back with his crouching tiger effect he went onto score a massive four try haul and even opened the second half with his fourth try as he uses a side step at a speed unknown to man and scored two full length try's he also puts every bit of effort he has into every run and tackle he makes during a game. Sam Graham was next to score try number six as the Unicorns defended a great set and there was a turnover close to the Mayfield try line as Sam took the ball at speed and sprinted the full length of the pitch for a great try. Next to score was the teams scrum half Dan Hickman who led the field today very well for his first time so well done "Speedy" I'm quite sure there will be more to come from Dan and on this time took the line on with a fine dummy pass as he raced through the tight gap for a great try and sealed the win. James Mercer scooped the tackle count by making tackles never seen before as he was in amazing form today. Keep up the good work guys. Player of the match was James Mercer, Sponsors award went to Dan Hickman the most improved coached player was Rony Frank and the best tackler of the match was Charlie Mercer.

24/02/2008 v Wigan St Jude's (away)
Wigan St Judes U9s - 40

Latchford Albion Unicorns U9s - 28

In this outstanding performance today the Unicorns pushed the giant sized team St Judes to the edge in the whole of this very entertaining game. Now with there impressive scrum half "speedy" who is starting to lead his forwards very well with there attack formation now changing and is taking time to settle in and I'm quite sure that if it wasn't for mistakes in this game this would have been very close one so take note Unicorns you are up with the best teams in under nines. First to open the score in the first half was Rony Frank who broke through the St Judes defence line with his power running skills as the defence fell from him to land a great try. Next was Sam Graham who as always puts all his effort into his power running onto the ball as fast as he can on the back of a quick play the ball which landed him in the in goal for a great try. The last but no means the least was the Unicorns full back Charlie Mercer who took the drop off from speedy and handed off the first defender to leave him the sprint in open field for a great sliding try. The Unicorns went into half time 28 - 12 to St Judes.

Second half is as always the downhill half and certainly the defence work improved dramatically as St Judes were only able to put three more try's past them in this half with some big shots being put in defence from both teams and surely was a second half arm wrestle ! I also know that if the Unicorns started out this way this would have surely been there victory day. First to open the scores in this half was power forward Mikey Syres who is now starting to show his power in defence and attack and has proved near impossible to stop close to the line as he raced two tries in for the team on the back of the meters made by all. Charlie Mercer was another player who scored in this half on the back of metres made downfield by the team and then speedy Dan Hickman who used his vision to see that the defenders were not set and raced in from the scoot for a great try. All the team tried hard today and stood up to the St Judes team which was very pleasing to see. The player of the match was Charlie Mercer, Dan Hickman scooped the best tackler, and Mikey Syres collected the sponsors award also the most improved coached player was awarded to Ellis Ditchfield.

02/03/2008 v West Bank Bears (home)

Latchford Albion Unicorns U9  -  28

West Bank Bears U9  -  8

Another super defence performance from the Unicorns today on a bigger pitch than they are normally used to which never bothered the team and they handled it very well for there age we also seen the new player Sam Martin make his debut today. During this first half it was the plan to start out tough and they certainly all responded to this as the first half was an impressive display of Rugby League with all the skills involved. Quick play the balls on the back of some outstanding meters made down field by the team and on many occasion the defence was caught out and the Unicorns multiplied on this gaining there rights of the home ground field position with the completion of sets and most was finished of with some fine tries. First try of the match was made by (speedy) Dan Hickman who has an excellent Rugby brain and he quickly realised that the defence was not set as he shot through the gap straight into the in goal he was also instrumental with his commands to his troops in his new position of scrum half. Next to score was Sam Graham who was on form today with his big strong running throughout this game and this time broke the defence line and went on a 50 meter sprint and as he said he would score a full length try this was one of his best scores. Next to score was the crouching tiger Charlie Mercer who went on a unstoppable run with running speed never seen before this took him down field with defenders falling from him combined with his neat step landed him a fine try he also was hard working in his new position of full back. Next was (Tricky) Mikey Syres who was in form today with some power running and some great defence work and this time used the scoot to pile over the try line he also missed chances with the referee disallowing three try's during this game. The Unicorns went into half time 16 - 4.

Second half kicked of with the same structure they started with the power running clever drop off's from speedy and sonic and the help your team mate in defence which is very pleasing from a coaching view as they stuck together and played as a team today. First to open the score in this half was Mikey Syres who again took the scoot and used his power to push his nose though for a try. Next the ever Strong runner Sam Graham who on this time took the ball from a great pass from (Sonic) James Mercer and then out stepped the oncoming defence for another try on his tally. The last try scored was made by Dan Hickman who collected a very sneaky off load from sonic as he covered the ball from sight as Speedy shot down field 50 meters and finished off with a jumping display try. You all must be mentioned for the team effort you put in today keep up the good work well done. Player of the match was Abby Wray the best tackler was Joe Adawee most improved player was Sam Graham and Alex Bryne collect the sponsors award.

09/03/2008 v Portico Vine (away)

Portico Vine U9's - 32

Latchford Albion Unicorns U9's - 56

A very entertaining Sunday morning with great rugby skills from the Unicorns with back to back sets defended superbly on there own line with speed running and the quick play the ball which the Portico team struggled to maintain. Although the unicorns started slowly the second half was much improved and showed just what they are capable of if everyone tries hard.
