Portico Vine U8 - 8Latchford Albion Unicorns U8 - '38'
Weather and pitch conditions were bad and any chances of free flowing rugby should have been impossible, however much to the delight of the supporters it proved to be a good game of simple but effective rugby. Latchford opened the score with a strong sole effort from Sam Graham. This was followed by 1 of 3 tries from Lewis Harmer who darted from acting half to score an undefended try. Morgan Adawee clocked up 8 points by crossing over twice with pure strength and determination. Portico scored down the right side were the defense was non-existing at the time to finish the first half 4 points to
16.
The start of the second period saw any hope of a comeback by Portico fade away when power and aggression saw jacob Proudlove score his first try for the U8s. Quick thinking again from Lewis Harmer as an early scoot caught the Portico defensive line napping for his second try. A well deserved short burst from Mikey Syres as he crossed the white
wash to finish off a good set of 6. Portico responded by crossing over out wide as Latchford tried to rally around on the now mud filled pitch. Morgan Adawee cancelled this try out by completing his hat trick of the match. Mitchell Rutter scored a well deserved try following some solid defensive work throughout the match. The last score completed Lewis Harmers hat trick, a strong run down the left side inches from touch to finish the game on a high. Good training sessions, team spirit and hard work are starting to come
good. All players are enjoying every aspect of the game.

Latchford Albion Unicorns U8 - 24Oldham St Annes U8 - 20
Well all I can say is how much this team has improved as each player's skill level is building and opposition teams are finding it hard to overcome their superb defence and fast flowing attack. As the Oldham team arrived Latchford Unicorns were warmed up and ready with their mini post and corner flags looking the part for this even-sided game. The first half started with Latchford retaining the ball in attack and was unable to reach the in goal for the first ten minutes. As the Unicorns switched into full steam ahead the first try was made by strong runner Charlie Mercer who took the ball at full speed and then bursting through the opposition defence landed him into the in-goal registering another one of his many trys. Second try in the first half was made by quick thinker Lewis Harmer who took the offload and sprinted straight down the wing to slide in the corner registering another one of his many trys. Third try of the first half was made by quick stepping Mikey Syres who took the ball and side stepped the defence and then dove for the try line to register another one of his many trys. Fourth try of the first half was made by fast feet (Shabba) Morgan Adawee who side stepped in a flash and then sprinted on the angle and dove for the goal line to register another one of his many trys. Latchford went into a very entertaining first half lead 16-8.
Second half underway and some more skilled rugby with our new debut player Nathan Ashbrook who led the acting half position with his skilled hands as the Unicorns pushed themselves and worked really hard to keep the strong attack under there arm. As some might say this arm wrestle was a game that showed what the Unicorns are capable of with the clever offloads and the ability to hold players up especially from (Jimbo) James Heaton and the 100% from Jacob Proudlove all put together for team in a class of it's own. Now that the unicorns have the skills tactics and the know how to read the way of play as the teams rugby has certainly improved. Second half try's were made by the ever strong runner Charlie Mercer who collected a hatrick of trys as he bursted every tackle with every run as this added to a great team effort to take the win as that was there own choice for today. All players must be recognised for there efforts and a big well done to you all. After a week's break due to the last game at Langworthy Reds being cancelled the Unicorns were up and ready for this local derby match with the warm up. They showed how enthusiastic they were and were ready for the Crosfields' side when the Cobras turned up. The latchford side got stuck in right frrom the start with with strong running from every one of the team. Big Charlie Mercer was running with all his power to go over the try line with the first of his three tries giving him a hat trick. Lewis Harmer was the next try scorer for the Unicorns as he went down the wing with his excellent side stepping that out stepped the Crosfields side. Little Danny Hickman went in with the first of his three tries utilising his speed as he side-stepped the Cobras to go in with the next two tries making it 16-0 at half time.
The second half kicked off with Crosfields doing an interchange bringing on some strong players but Latchford didn't let that put them off and they just carried on making even harder tackles than before. Crosfields then scored three tries as the volume from both sidelines increased. The Unicorns pushed that little bit harder taking the scores 24-20 before Charlie Mercer put the game beyond reach with another score.
The coaches said well done to all the latchford side for their efforts and deserved win namely Charlie, Danny, James, Lewis, Jimbo, Mitchell, Mikey, Morgan, Jacob, Ellis, Liam, Nathan and Sam. As the ever enjoyable Sunday match for players and families and even professional St Helens player Willie Talau was there to enjoy today. The first half commenced with the Unicorns running with a switch in the usual starting positions and as the big Blackbrook team gathered momentum the Unicorns surprisingly struggled to manage and control there attack. First try of the match was made by (Tricky) Mikey Syres as he cleverly read the field of play and scooted between two defenders. The Unicorns went into half time 28-4 to Blackbrook.
Second half went with a shadow of the first half it seemed that the teams defence was the Unicorns downfall today but as true Latchford pride they dug in and tried to regain what they had let go. first try of the second half was made by (speedy) Danny Hickman who slotted in at acting half quickly reading the defence positions combined with his great step flew over the try line. Second, third and fourth try was made by (Road Runner) Charlie Mercer who as allways takes the ball at super speed as he blasted through the big Blackbrook defence to give him another great hatrick of tries. 15/04/2007 v Burtonwood Bulldogs (Haliwell Jones Stadium)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U8 - 16Burtonwood Bulldogs U8 - 28
The end to a great rugby weekend. The build up started on Saturday with a "meet the players" at the Halliwell Jones stadium. After watching the players train, all autographs were given out to the lads. The smiling faces told it all, yet there was more to follow on Sunday with a local derby clash with Burtonwood Bulldogs played at the spectacular Warrington Wolves stadium. As the Unicorns walked into the Halliwell Jones stadium with amazing excitement even parents, brothers and sisters and supporters were all on a high. As the teams went onto the pitch it was like walking down the red carpet with a quick warm up session and the sun shining in a roaring heat the team were all raring to go. What a game of rugby league to follow with there now experienced skills on show this was a very entertaining game to watch with support play even off loads quick play of the ball and great ball handling.
As the first sound of the whistle went The Bulldogs gained their feet first with a settling try. However with the crowd spurring and cheering the unicorns on with a few completed sets of 6 with both sides struggling for momentum due to outstanding defence. More than determined a bursting run from Charlie Mercer was the start that the Unicorns needed in the first half as he crossed for a well deserved try The trys for the Unicorns was made by speedy Danny Hickman who used his great running speed which landed him two trys of this match with his second using his quick thinking skills darting a scoot to score. This followed end to end play with countless tackles and powerful runs as the blazing sun shone down the Unicorn interchanges were needed more than usual and as usual there was so much effort being put into the rugby the lads probably didn't even notice the couple of hundred fans watching on. Two quick tries by the Bulldogs who used the width of the pitch to the best advantage put them ahead at the half time whistle. The heat began to tell on the big lads and the Bulldogs ran in a few unanswered tries but only for the Unicorns to regroup as there efforts was never ending. With only minutes remaining and even more supporters arriving they were welcomed to the ground by what can only be classed as the try of the afternoon, for this late on in the game Jacob Proudlove crashed through the Bulldogs big defenders to run three quarters of the pitch to score a fantastic try for the Unicorns. This closed the match but certainly not the final experience as a lap of honour at half time with a great applause from all the supporters at the ground With beaming faces and proud looks this is certainly a day to remember, we have to thank Warrington Wolves for probably one of the best weekends that we will all experience players, sisters, parents and supporters but most of all coaches. Many thanks.
