Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 0Orrell St James' U10 - '30'
Latchford's Under Tens finally managed to get their new squad out onto the playing field after a false start the week before being cancelled en route to Hindley as the Heavens opened.
After an enthusiastic start to the game, Latchford found it hard to keep up with the very pacey Orrell St James. The visitors found their feet early with tries in the first few minutes. Latchford kept on battling all throughout the game but Orrell were just far too strong for this 'new' Latchford side. It should be borne in mind by Latchford's young charges that this season will be a baptism of fire as most of the opponents they will face have been together for the past two or three years. It will be a great sign of character to stick with it and gel as a team, which should be judged at the end of the season rather than in these early stages.
Stalwart Connor Byron was the players' ,player and a lot will rest with him this year as he helps bring on his newer team mates and introduce them to the game. The same goes foir top tackler Lewis Fry. There were great debuts for player of the match Troy Holcroft and Callum Wightman. Back to top
08/10/2006 v Waterhead (away)
Waterhead U10 - 30Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 0
The score line presents a poor reflection of a game in which Latchford displayed some excellent team work and gritty determination, contributing in full to a hard-fought but sporting match enjoyed by spectators. Lapses in defence cost Latchford dear on a number of occasions when, having otherwise contained a strong Waterhead team, missed tackles allowed individual players to step through and score.
At the other end of the field, whilst the opposition must be credited with good defence, the Unicorns will surely not be so close again so many times without returning with points. In an all-out excellent team effort, Callum Whightman took the man of the match award for combining strong running with the biggest defensive hits. Top tackler award went to Rhys Murphy, with Lewis Fry voted the players' player of the game. However this was above all a team effort where the Unicorns showed great signs of what they can achieve as a unit working together. The coach's award went to the whole team in recognition of great work from every player. Back to top
15/10/2006 v Ince Rose Bridge Lions (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 8Ince Rose Bridge Lions U10 - 38
Things are looking up for Latchford Albion under 10s; the score certainly doesn't reflect how Latchford performed. Ince raced away to an early lead through some poor defending by Latchford, who held Ince for ages, battling together as a team. That team work paid off with Coaches' Award winner Lewis Fry going over for the first try of Latchford's year, which was met with celebration and smiley faces from all concerned.
Latchford put in a big defensive effort in the second half; the tackling from each and every player was absolutely fantastic. Elliott Fry was top tackler and Jack Allen was player-of-the-match. Ince broke through the Unicorns' line 2 or 3 times through our lost concentration and this resulted in a few tries. However, the last 10 minutes was all Latchford, with telling pressure on the Ince line and constantly going so close to that line without any reward. Kieran Stanger went very close on one occasion just being held up over the line but went on to receive the Player's Player award. The pressure started to tell when a few good hard runs resulted in Connor Byron getting in the right position to make himself available to score Latchford's second of the season. This capped off a fantastic spell of pressure and although Ince scored the last try, it really didn't reflect the effort that Latchford put in right throughout the game. Back to top
22/10/2006 v Widnes Moorfield (away)
Widnes Moorfield U10 - 30Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 0
Latchford Under 10s showed a determined effort both in attack and defence today but found it difficult to break the Widnes defensive line down. The score definitely did not reflect all the effort Latchford put in, all the team showed they were playing as a team and working as a unit. The Widnes tries all came from lapses in concentration and the Albion were unfortunate to let these tries in. On several occasions Latchford could have broken down the Widnes defence but took the wrong option.
The team are showing good signs of development and are heading in the right direction, and they are still enjoying their rugby, over the coming weeks there are definitely good things around the corner for such a determined Latchford side.

05/11/2006 v West Bank Bears (away)
Widnes Moorfield U10 - 42Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 12
Remember remember the 5th November, Latchford Under 10's will remember the 5th November with a very determined effort to challenge a big West Bank Bears side. The game was a very evenly matched contest with some fantastic tackles coming in from Latchford. The game showed definite improvement in the Under 10's and showed they are progressing in the right direction.
In both halves all the team showed signs they were there to play and made a determined effort. West Banks tries came after brief lapses in concentration in the Latchford defensive line. Arguably the main highlights of the game were the three superb tries scored by player-of-the-match Troy Holcroft who showed some fantastic pace to get around the defenders and touch down over the line.
Special mentions have to go to the entire team for a brave effort in defence and attack and every single player came off with a smile on their face after the game. Players Player was awarded to Lewis Fry, the Coaches' Award winners were Matthew Grimshaw and Alex Foster, while the Top Tacklers were Rhys Murphy and Kieran Stanger Back to top

A very determined Latchford effort was not enough to see off a very enthusiastic Shevington side. The game was littered with controversial moments throughout, these controversial moments got everybody talking and ultimately helped Shevington to gain advantage and also points!
There some fantastic contributions from all the Latchford players, some nice contributions right across the board but especially from Daniel Smith who put in some cracking tackles, Troy Holcroft who did some fantastic running and also Matty Grimshaw who scored our only try, which was a fantastic effort and he showed tremendous speed to touch down.
The players are definitely coming on and are going in the right direction, Keep your head up guys we are getting there!

Latchford had to come up with a big effort to get on top of a very resilient Rylands Sharks side. The Unicorns showed a very big effort but it just wasn't enough to overcome the home side. There were plenty of encouraging signs, with some great tackles and fantastic handling skills. Latchford worked hard and nearly scored on a couple of occasions through Daniel Smith who ended up in touch and also Matthew Grimshaw who misjudged where the try line was. The Latchford performances are getting better all the time and the skills are developing all the time. What was also encouraging was they all wanted to take the ball up. Guys keep your heads up and keep working hard the rewards will come soon enough.

26/11/2006 v Pilkington Recs (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 4Pilkington Recs U10 - 34
The score really didn't reflect the performance that Latchford put in today. Latchford showed a lot of grit and determination to put in some massive defensive shots. The few times that Pilkington's did cross the line, were because of silly errors and conceding penalties in the wrong areas of the field. Latchford got close to the try line on a few occasions but just couldn't complete. Their one and only try was scored by Lewis Fry.
The whole team were outstanding, special mention goes to Jordan Hickey who put himself about on his debut and showed some speed and class, also Daniel Asprey who is improving all the time and only playing his second game of the year. Everyone played their part in a very thrilling and entertaining match, the signs of improvement are definitely there for everyone to see, Pilkington's coach was also very complimentary of the whole team and was full of positives about the skills and the tackles that were on show today.
We are not far off and the guys looked dead enthusiastic and look ready to work. Things are starting to come together and with that sort of performance today we are definitely heading in the right direction, so keep your heads up.

03/12/2006 v Leigh Miners Rangers (away)
Leigh Miners Rangers U10 - 48Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 20
Another superb effort from the ever growing and developing Latchford Under 10's. The effort that every single player put into the game was absolutely fantastic.
The battle hardened Latchford were good in attack and showed some good defensive qualities. A lot of Leigh?s tries came out on the wing when Latchford failed to move the line across to cover the gaps that developed out wide. Latchford also put some cheap ball on the floor and gifted possession back to Leigh who capitalised.
Although Leigh scored some good tries Latchford showed they could score some equally good tries. Rhys Murphy opened the first half scoring while Lewis Fry opened the second half scoring for Latchford with a fantastic scoot from the acting half back position. Leigh was kind enough to lend us two players, Robert in the 1st half and Dan in the 2nd half. Dan scored 2 tries bursting through some sub par defending. After that Latchford showed they were capable of holding their own and came up with a couple of brilliant individual efforts from Rhys Murphy and also in the last few minutes Latchford had a penalty for a high shot, Troy Holcroft barged through some very tired Leigh defenders got over the line, and off loaded the ball back to Matthew Grimshaw who was on hand to touch down the slippy ball.
Overall every single Latchford player showed a lot of passion and commitment and can hold their heads up high knowing they put in an absolutely fantastic effort.
Keep your heads up guys we are going in the right direction

14/01/2007 v Langworthy Reds (away)
Langworthy Reds U10 - 36Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 12
The ever growing and improving Under 10s put in another great performance to show they are an ever growing side. The game was a fantastic test of Latchford's character and determination. The game started off slow with Langworthy posting the first points on the board. Latchford soon found their feet when Troy Holcroft did a brilliant barnstorming run straight from the restart and went down the touchline brushing off the opposition to score Latchford's first try of the game. Latchford showed a lot of resilience in defence but somehow Langworthy seemed to find their way through. Although Langworthy found their way to the line a few times Latchford weren't downhearted, and showed a lot of spirit to keep pushing Langworthy and it finally paid off when Lewis Fry weaved his way over the try line from dummy half.
In the second half Latchford had a lot of possession, and made that possession pay when a great team movement resulted in a fantastic score from Matt Grimshaw who broke away down the touchline and scored in the corner from a great offload from Lewis Fry. Although Latchford didn?t score any more Tries after that they showed some fantastic touches to show that they are going in the right direction.
All the team played well but special mentions go to Chris Joselyn who played his 1st game in Latchford colours, Daniel Asprey and Daniel Smith who are growing in confidence and also Sarah Wright who showed some fantastic defence, keep your heads up and keep smiling as we are all going in the right direction. Lewis Fry was player of the match, Rhys Murphy was players' player. Chris Joselyn picked up the coaches' award and Troy Holcroft was top tackler. Back to top
21/01/2007 v Crosfield Cobras (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 0Crosfield Cobras U10 - 30
This weekend saw the growing Under 10s come up against their local rivals from down the road in the shape of Crosfields Cobras. The game was played in awful weather conditions, and Latchford found this really tough going. The game started off with Latchford conceding possession and Crosfields going in for a try. This rocked the Latchford spirit temporarily, as Latchford had back to back sets through penalties, they pushed the Crosfields defence to the limits but just could not find a way through. Mid way through the half Latchford they had registered their 1st score of the afternoon with Troy Holcroft barging through some ordinary tackling by Crosfields, but the Try didn?t stand as it was ruled out for a knock on by the referee.
Latchford kept plugging away but for no reward, they made some fantastic tackles and showed that they could be a force to be reckoned with, towards the end of the 2nd half Jordan Hickey burst through the Crosfields defence making a fantastic dart towards the line only to be denied by a fantastic cover tackle from one of the Crosfields players that dislodged the ball from Jordan?s hands as he touched down. Although we didn't win there were lots of positives to take from this game, we are going in the right direction, keep it up guys. Player of the match was Troy Holcroft, the Players Player was Lewis Fry, the Coaches Award went to Kieran Stanger while Top Tackler was Jordan Hickey Back to top
28/01/2007 v Blackbrook Royals (away)
Blackbrook Royals U10 - 30Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 0
This was a true test of character for Latchford today as they took on Blackbrook Royals. Unfortunately Latchford did not manage to get over the touch line during this game to day but showed plenty of character, and plenty of resolve. The game was not as one way as the score suggests, Latchford had some very good possession but lost the ball from some dubious decisions from the Blackbrook referee. Latchford were unlucky not to score on several occasions as they put some very good passages of play together, but just failing to get over the white wash.
The game showed fantastic team spirit from Latchford as they drove the ball forward hard, and in defence showed they could match in defence with some fantastic tackling. In defence praise has to go to Sarah Wright and also Chris Joselyn who grew in confidence and put in some fantastic tackles, when they were required to. All the team however also deserve accolades for the way they approached the game and all worked as one team, giving great promotion to the ball and also working together, well done guys we are on he right track. 04/02/2007 v Culcheth Eagles (home)
Latchford AlbionUnicorns U10 - 12Culcheth Eagles U10 - 40
Another good Latchford performance showed great progress and great enthusiasm in today?s game. The result might not have gone Latchford's way, but the team between them showed plenty of good touches. Culcheth scored 1st but definitely didn?t have run of the game, on the back of a good set off six Latchford hit back with a highly disputed score from Dan Asprey, with the Culcheth players disputing that Dan was tackled into touch before he grounded the ball but the Try stood. Latchford came close several times to scoring during the match, with Troy Holcroft, Rhys Murphy, Alex Foster and Elliot Fry going close. Latchford's other 2 Tries came courtesy of Lewis Fry, his 1st Try came from a fantastic scoot from dummy half, and his 2nd Try a little bit more controversial he put the ball down legally in the in goal area, but disputes came again came from the Culcheth team saying he had put the ball down after he his feet had gone into the dead ball area.
Overall the game went well, the new kits were fantastic and the general play was superb, we are definitely heading in the right direction as to where we need to be heading, we just need to sure up that defence and we will be there. Player of the match was Rebecca Spencer, Players Player was Lewis Fry, the Coaches Award went to Daniel Asprey and Elliot Fry whilst Sarah Wright was top tackler Back to top
18/02/2007 v Mayfield Mustangs (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 8Mayfield Mustangs U10 - 38
This was another good effort by the ever growing and ever developing Latchford side, as they took on a very physical Mayfield Mustangs team. Latchford started off slowly by conceding an early try to Mayfield but Latchford showed a lot of bite and clawed their way slowly back into the game. Several times they put pressure on the opposition but it didn't lead to anything. Then, when Latchford got Mayfield right on their line, they made the pressure tell with a fantastic power drive from Daniel Asprey to power over the line for Latchford's first try of the game.
The second half saw Latchford put more pressure on Mayfield with the pressure not leading to anything. During one set a great play developed with Lewis Fry linking up with Rhys Murphy and the ball ending up in Troy Holcroft's hands who ran nearly the full length of the pitch to touch down for Latchford's second try and arguably the best try of the game.
The score really doesn't reflect the effort that Latchford put into the game in both defence and attack, more and more positives coming out of the game; keep it up guys we are certainly going the right way forward.

Milnrow Cobras U10 - 38Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 22
A determined second half effort by Latchford, managed to reduce the final score to a deficit of just 16 points. Latchford had started off slowly but quickly gathered momentum and possession as the game went on. Latchford's first try was scored right towards the end of the first half by some quick thinking by Lewis Fry, who exploited a big gap on the left hand side of the defence to go in under the posts.
Latchford's second try again came from Lewis Fry who managed to get over the line after linking up with Chris Joslyn. With Lewis Fry kicking the conversion this took the Latchford score into double figures. Latchford's third try came from a penalty close to the line which Lewis Fry again managed to score from close range after some quick thinking, with Rhys Murphy adding the conversion taking Latchford's scoring to 16 points. Latchford's final try came in the dying minutes of the second half with a quick play of the ball and a great pass to Troy Holcroft who then went crashing over the line, with Troy converting his own try bringing a great game to a close with the respectable final score of 38-22

Latchford faced a difficult game today when they took on Westhoughton Lions. It took a while for Latchford to get going but when Latchford did get going they looked better and better all the time with ball in hand.
Latchford's only score came in the second half with some great passing and the ball ending up in Matthew Grimshaw?s hands and he run on a diagonal and managed to dive under the defenders and put the ball for Latchford's try. Latchford had plenty of opportunity to go forward but could simply not convert all the pressure they were building into points. Latchford showed though they are developing and are getting better all the time. We are not that far we have just got to keep going and keep smiling!!!

Latchford faced another difficult game today when they took on Saint Helens team Clock Face. Desire and determination were the 2 key words used pre match. And although Latchford didn?t score in the game but there was plenty of desire and determination on show in different parts of the game. Although Latchford started out slowly they started to pick themselves up off the ground ands started getting into the game. Latchford showed some fantastic skills in defence, keeping Clock Face scoreless for a good 5-10 minutes; although Latchford didn?t score they showed some very good handling skills and also showed some very good skills going forward. This was a fantastic team performance every single member of the team showed good signs of development and they all contributed to what was a fantastic game to watch. Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 28Wigan St Cuthbert's U10 - 54
Latchford showed what was arguably their best performance of the season and brought them closer to that first win this season. They showed a lot of strength, desire and determination in both attack and defence. Latchford started off as they were planning to go on throughout the game with a beautiful break from Troy Holcroft which led to Troy crashing over to score Latchford's first try of the game. After Wigan St Cuthbert's scored a try of their own some great work by Rhys Murphy and Lewis Fry led to Lewis Fry crashing over the line for his first of the game. Late in the first half two more tries were posted from Lewis Fry who scooted from dummy half and crashed over the line and then Rhys Murphy drove his way over the line and managed to get the ball down on terra firma, with hotly disputed claims from the Wigan players that Rhys Murphy was held up over the line.
Latchford came out in the second half and managed to post two more tries, again the Troy Holcroft made a good break and managed to bash his way over the try line to score his second, which he managed to covert to narrow the deficit. Latchford had lots of other chances to score but just couldn't get over the line. Then, towards the end of the match, Kieran Stanger ran onto a great ball and managed to barge his way way through some paper thin Wigan defence to score the final try of the game. Kieran also added the extras with a goal kick. It was an absolutely fantastic game of Rugby with some great Rugby on show from Latchford Albion

Latchford showed another creditable performance, but the performance was not enough to overcome a determined Langworthy side. Although Latchford failed to score during the game they showed some fantastic signs that they are ever growing and developing and going forward in the right direction. This was echoed by the Langworthy coach who was very impressed with Latchford's attitude and the fact they were growing and developing and going out with the right attitude to the game. Latchford had shown some great signs going forward with some great effort and fantastic determination. Latchford put together a very enthusiastic performance against a good Saddleworth side. The game was not all as one way traffic as the score suggests, Latchford had a lot of good chances to score but just couldn't complete the chances they had. The score also doesn't show the great team effort that Latchford put in, they were all working for each other and all trying to help each other out and they showed some very encouraging signs both in attack and defence. All throughout the game all the team were playing with smiles on their faces and really enjoying playing and talking to one another. Another great performance from an ever growing and developing Latchford side, the team didn't get a win but showed they could through a real test of their character as a team. Latchford did not do a lot wrong during the game they defended well and made Portico work for the tries, the way Portico scored a lot of their tries were round the outside of our defence. Latchford looked very good going forward at times and had plenty of chances near the line but could not convert these chances into points. Latchford's only try came towards the end of the game when Latchford were putting a good set together on the Portico try line and the ball went out to Troy Holcroft who strolled over to score right at the end of the match. A very well done to all the team who showed in the second half what they can do when they work as a team, they showed some great defence and some great attack. Another great performance by the vastly improving Latchford Under 10s. Latchford showed a lot of grit and determination especially throughout the 1st half. Their heads didn?t drop and they played well together as a team. Although Latchford only scored the 1 Try through Lewis Fry, they were unlucky not to score more tries as they built a lot of pressure on the Oldham line but just couldn?t convert their pressure into points. Everyone played as a team and worked well together, all the team were a credit to themselves as they stuck to what was needed and also produced some fantastic tackling between them. Consistency is a funny word in Rugby League, but the ever developing and ever improving Latchford showed that they could be consistent with another fantastic performance in the last game of the season. There was no disgrace in Latchford as they showed an absolutely outstanding performance and had everyone on the sidelines talking about the good times to come next year. Latchford worked well in both attack and defence; the Tries that Ince scored just didn?t come from bad tackling just short lapses in concentration. Latchford were very unlucky not to score a Try on several occasions when they drove the ball forward on well through the likes of Dan Asprey, Troy Holcroft, Kieran Stanger and Rhys Murphy setting the platform.
