Halton Farnworth Hornets U14 - 16Latchford Albion Unicorns U14 - 18
Latchford returned from Widnes with the points following an exciting game between two evenly matched sides. Latchford were without Jon Rigby and Andy Unsworth who both failed fitness tests before kick-off. However, the eighteen men on duty did themselves proud with a fully committed defensive effort.
Both sides tore into each other from the off and following an accidental clash of heads both James Brazendale and his opponent took no further part. Halton's shrewd kicking game saw them take the lead after 5 minutes although Latchford struck back when the ever dangerous Damon Rauhihi powered over from 30 metres. George Briggs added the goal. The Hornets then laid siege to the Unicorns but their line remained in tact following a massive defensive effort led by impressive all round displays from Gareth Cox, Tom Hardman, Fraser Jones-Lake and Tom Green. HT 6-6.
Halton took the lead straight after the break scoring from close range on the back of two consecutive penalties. This sparked Latchford's best spell and they took the lead when Hardman went on a weaving run from half way to score a memorable try by the posts. Briggs added the extras. When Rauhihi added his second, converted by Briggs, the game looked safe, however the Hornets snatched a late try and ensured that the match was in the balance until the last play of the game. Latchford Albion Unicorns U14 - 36Leyland Warriors U14 - 30
Latchford almost snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by conceding 16 points in the last 5 minutes against a team who, to their immense credit, played right to the final whistle.
The preceding 45 minutes saw Latchford produce some fine rugby on the back of a powerful go-forward lead by Eddie Krawiescki, Andy Unsworth, Damon Rauhihi, Mike Hesketh and Fraser Jones-Lake.
Latchford, who led 20-10 at the break, scored tries through Tom Hardman three, Rauhihi two, Krawiescki and Jon Rigby. George Briggs kicked four excellent conversions. Back to top
04/03/2007 v Pilkington Recs (away)
Pilkingtons Recs U14 - 14Latchford Albion Unicorns U14 - 22
The lead changed five times in this see-saw game played in atrocious conditions. With the strong wind at their backs Latchford were guilty of trying to force the play and fell behind early, however enthusiastic defence forced the hosts to spill the ball on their own line and Jon Rigby dropped on the ball to score. George Briggs added the goal. Latchford then squandered a number of opportunities a fell behind just before half time to well taken try. HT 8-6 Pilks.
Facing the wind and the rain Latchford rolled their sleeves up and powered forward with Eddie Krawieski, Andy Unsworth, Tom Hardman and Damon Rauhihi leading the way. Latchford took the lead again when Rigby charged under the posts. Briggs goaled. Pilkingtons immediately hit back with a controversial try and converted to regain the lead. This really fired the intensity within the Unicorn ranks and they were rewarded when
Lloyd Feather finished off a neat passing move. The last eight minutes saw numerous errors as both sides suffered in the appalling conditions, however Latchford sealed the points when Rauhihi summoned the energy to power through from 60 metres for a thrilling try. Briggs completed the scoring.
Both sides deserve every credit for the entertainment provided and Latchford can be particularly proud that their team spirit stood them in good stead when the going got tough. Back to top
11/03/2007 v Saddleworth Rangers (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U14 - 16Saddleworth Rangers U14 - 0
After conceding 38 points to Rangers in the reverse fixture, Latchford took to the field determined to put the record straight and produced controlled performance underpinned by a fantastic defensive effort.
The stiff breeze plus two careless penalties put Latchford on the back foot early on, however once the storm had been weathered forwards Eddie Krawiecki, Andy Unsworth, Damon Rauhihi and Mike Hesketh began to create space for the impressive Jon Rigby with some powerful surges. The Unicorns opened the scoring after 10 minutes when full back Phil Woollacott fielded a kick close to his own line and weaved his way to the 30
metre line. A perfectly timed pass released Matt Reid who charged away fending off the cover to score a fine try. Latchford then had a fine spell which saw Louis Houghton storm over from 35 metres catching Tom Hardman's kick at full speed. The same player then dived in for his second with a great opportunist try in the corner. The half finished with Hardman darting over after a superb handling move saw the visitors defence
unable to regroup.
The second half was tough and uncompromising as the visitors defensive effort improved considerably. Latchford were guilty of trying to play too expansive a game, however enthusiastic defence, epitomised when the diminutive Woollacott put in an amazing tackle on Saddleworth's biggest forward ensured that the home teams line was not breached. 18/03/2007 v Hindley (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U14 - 34Hindley U14 - 8
Latchford ability to control the ball in the gale force conditions combined with an enthusiastic defensive line saw them run out comfortable victors.
The home side created some early pressure with some solid defence and Damon Rauhihi opened the scoring stepping through a huge hole after Eddie Krawiecki had gone close. George Briggs converted. Krawiecki then added a second try, crashing
over after full back Matt Reids 70 metre surging run. Briggs added the extras. From the resulting kick off Jon Rigby fielded the ball on the 30 metre line and stepped through a ragged defensive line and sprinted away to score under the posts. Briggs added another two with the kick. HT 18-0
Latchford continued to pour forward in the second half with Tom Green, Mike Hesketh, Andy Unsworth, Greg Ryder and James Brazendale all impressing. The visitors continued to test the Latchford defence with some strong running however the Unicorns went further ahead when Tom Hardman darted over from 20 metres. Hesketh goaled. Hindley then had their best spell and scored an excellent try wide out to reduce the arrears. The home side then produced some of their best rugby and Reid's overlapping
run saw him score off the best handling move of the game. The same player added his second shortly after, charging over from 30 metres after picking up the loose ball from Fraser Jones-Lake's crunching tackle. Briggs completed Latchfords scoring with the conversion. Hindley added a further score with the last play of the match. Back to top
25/03/2007 v Chorley Panthers (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U14 - 34Chorley Panthers U14 - 20
Chorley arrived at Loushers Lane knowing that victory would give them an outside chance of winning the First Division title, however they ran head on into a progressive Unicorns squad looking to extend their unbeaten league record in 2007.
Latchford gave a debut to Feme Adeputan, who experienced both the highs and lows of sport in the space of 30 minutes. A try with his first touch of the ball after his introduction from the bench, was followed by an excellent contribution and ended with a freak accident resulting in a broken shin.
Chorley stated their intentions early scoring off their first set. This sparked Latchford into action with the forwards running strongly and they took the lead when Damon Rauhihi powered over under the posts. George Briggs added the extras. Chorley hit back immediately and scored a well worked try by the posts. The rest of the half belonged to the Unicorns as Tom Hardman, Adeputan and Mike Hesketh added tries on the back
off a relentless wave of attacks led by Eddie Krawiecki, Andy Unsworth, Jack Phillips, Matt Reid and Fraser Jones-Lake and a very solid defensive line in which Lewis Houghton put in some crunching tackles. HT 22-10.
The second half started as the first with the Panthers scoring early however the Latchford defence regrouped forcing numerous errors. The home side piled on the pressure and after Reid had been dragged down just short, quick hands from Briggs saw Jon Rigby sprint under the posts. Briggs goaled. Chorley then scored a freak try when Adeputan attempted kick clearance from the in goal area hit the chasing attacker full force in the mid-riff causing him to fall forward both scoring a try and falling on the unfortunate fullback who played no further part in the game. At 28-20 Latchford were in no mood to let the game slip and Hardman sealed the game diving over from close in for his second try. Briggs made it 5 out of 6 with the boot. Back to top
01/04/2007 v Rylands Sharks (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U14 - 28Rylands Sharks U14 - 16
The big crowd assembled at Victoria Park, were treated to another enthralling game between these two fully committed sides, who, in difficult breezy conditions, provided some excellent entertainment in a bruising contest.
Rylands were quickly out of the blocks forcing a drop out from their first set of six and following good pressure Campbell crashed over in the corner. The rest of the half however belonged to the Unicorns who powered forward with Eddie Krawiecki, Andy Unsworth, Mike Hesketh and James Brazendale leading the way. Latchford took the lead when Jon Rigby combined with Tom Hardman in midfield and the loose forward tore through a gap to score from 35 metres. George Briggs converted. From the kick off
Hesketh exploited a disjointed Sharks chase only to be stopped on the 20 metre line. Good work from Fraser Jones-Lake was followed by a determined surge by right wing partner Louis Houghton who barged over. Briggs added the extras. The Unicorns continued to dominate and scored again when Lloyd Feather dived in at the corner after Brazendale's excellent offload. An injury to Krawiecki allowed Latchford to introduce Damon Rauhihi to proceedings and just on half time he powered over under the posts to round off another spell of pressure. Briggs goal sent Latchford in with a 22-4 HT lead.
Latchford spent most of the second half on the backfoot, with lack of discipline and poor ball retention putting them under pressure. Williams scored out wide and then Vernon took advantage of a fortunate bounce of the ball to reduce the arrears. The home sides defence was generally solid, however when Mercer reduced the deficit to 22-16 it seemed the game maybe slipping away. Latchford then showed their character and
resilience and produced a good spell of pressure which resulted in Rauhihi driving over by the posts. Briggs completed the scoring. Back to top
