U13 Giants 06-07

10/09/2006 v Waterhead (away)
Waterhead U13 - 34
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 12

Six knock-ons from Waterhead kicks weighed heavily against the Giants as such mistakes invariably result in a conceeded try at this level. The Giants' second half was a much better one but the wake-up call was too late to repair the damage that was already done. The Giants were very strong defensively down the centre of the pitch and virtually all the conceeded points were near the corner flags thus ensuring that Waterhead failed to convert all but one of their tries.

Latchford's try scorers were Luke Gilooley, Sam Brennan and Steven Pilkington Back to top
17/09/2006 v Leigh Miners Rangers (home)
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 6
Leigh Miners Rangers U13 - 36

The Giants found the going tough against the Leigh Miners in their second fixture in the higher division in which they were promoted to. Despite a number of skillfull attacks from the Giants, the Miners solidly held their ground and forced errors from the Giants allowing them to maintain a very high percentage of the possesion. The Giants defensive line, although strong, eventually succumbed from the intense pressure of the Leigh Miners attacking play and as the match progressed in the second half the score differential increased.

Thomas Hill scored the Giants only try which was reliably converted into a goal by Luke Gilooley. Defensively the Giants completed an disproportionate number of tackles with Dominic Jones, Andrew Gilbert, Daniel Harbidge Lloyd O'Brien and Taylor Wheat completing over 55 tackles between them. Dominic Jones was awarded man of the match with Daniel Harbidge getting the coaches award and Andrew Gilbert the 'Top Tackler' award for completing 18 tackles during the match Back to top
24/09/2006 v Hindley (away)
Hindley U13 - 24
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 14

The Giants played a good first half with the score at half time a much improved 12-10. A couple of errors in the second half were heavily punished by Hindley despite some frenetic tackling in defence of the Giants' line. The Giants again worked overtime defensively with Lloyd O'Brien and Ben Sherlock working particularly well as a combined pair in the centre of the pitch and matched just as effictively off to one side by Andrew Gilbert and Daniel Harbidge.

Overall it was much improved performance from the team as they build up to the level of play in this higher division. Ben Sherlock was awarded man of the match with Lloyd O'Brien getting the coaches award and Andrew Gilbert the 'Top Tackler' award for the second week after completing 13 tackles during the match. Try scorers were Steven Pilkington, Daniel Harbidge and Luke Gilooley. Jordan Sherlock kicked a goal Back to top
01/10/2006 v Burtonwood Bulldogs (home)
Latchford Albion Giants U13 -16
Burtonwood Bulldogs U13 - 32

The Giants again played a good first half with the score at half time tied 16-16 even though the Giants failed to convert a goal. Handling errors in the second half were again heavily punished, and the Giants' scoreless second half allowed Burtonwood to take a lead, but only after 10 minutes. The Giants hopes remained high but two errors in the last 10 minutes of the match were exploited to the full twelve points sealing a win for Burtonwood.

The Giants' tries were scored by Luke Gilooley, Jordan Sherlock, James Arnold and Ben Sherlock but no goals were kicked. Andrew Gilbert was awarded man of the match with James Arnold getting the coaches award and Taylor Wheat the ?Top Tackler? award for
completing 12 tackles during the match. Back to top
08/10/2006 v Waterhead (home)
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 8
Waterhead U13 - 8

The Giants played a storming match against league leaders Waterhead and lead all the way until the final couple of minutes of the match. The solid work of both the backs and forwards kept Waterhead at bay and provided the opportunity to launch repeated attempts on their line.

After the defeats earlier in the season the extra coaching sessions have started to bear fruit with the Giants playing the majority of the match on their terms rather than the oppositions. The knock on problem of the earlier matches seems to have been knocked on the head and the Giants are looking forward to winning their first match on the not to distant future.

Try scorers: Luke Gilooley, Jordan Sherlock
Goal scorers: None

Andrew Gilbert was the Giants ?Top Tackler? with Jordan Sherlock getting the coaches award. The man of the match award was given to the team as a whole in recognition of the teamwork that went into the match. Back to top
15/10/2006 v West Bank Bears (away)
West Bank Bears U13 - 12
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 8

The Giants were on level terms with West Bank and, although both teams scored two tries, the Giants failed to convert theirs into extra points and lost the match. Ben Sherlock scored both the Latchford tries. Once again the Giants worked very hard throughout the game and matched West Bank on the pitch, spending most of the match camped in the home team's half. Despite the amount of territorial possession the Giants had, West Bank's defence of their line was ferocious, resulting in a low scoring match.

Ben Sherlock was rightly awarded them man on the match trophy with Andrew Gilbert again being the Giants' Top Tackler. James Arnold received the coaches' award for his outstanding contribution on the right wing. Back to top
22/10/2006 v Golborne Parkside (home)
Latchfrod Albion Giants U13 - 5
Golborne Parkside U13 - 26

The giants played a good first half and with the half time score 10-6
in Parkside's favour hopes were high for a Latchford victory in the
second half but this didn't materialise as the Giants failed to raise
the pace of the game into their favour and failed to breach Parkside
strong defensive lineout.

Try scorers: Dominic Jones

Goal scorers: 1 x Drop Goal from Jordan Sherlock

Ben Sherlock was the Giants Top Tackler with Liam Hanley being awarded
the Coaches Award for his focussed and committed play throughout the
match. Sam Brennan was awarded the Man of the Match trophy for his
attitude and play throughout the match. Back to top
29/10/2006 v Shevington Sharks (away)
Shevington Sharks U13 - 22
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 6

The giants trailed 6-0 at the end of first half but pulled back level until 10 minutes from the final whistle when Shevington pulled ahead by 6 points. Hopes remained high that the giants would pull back level again and nearly scored another but for a handling error on the Sharks line. A lapse of concentration then let the Sharks score again at which
point the Giants will crumbled alowing the Sharks to score again on the last set before the final whistle.

Try scorers: Jordan Sherlock
Goal scorers: Lloyd O'Brien

Ben Sherlock was again the Giants Top Tackler with Steven Pilkington being awarded the Coaches Award for his focussed and committed play throughout the match. Jack Buckley was awarded the Man of the Match trophy for his attitude and play throughout the match. Back to top
12/11/2006 v Ince Rose Bridge (home)
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 26
Ince Rose Bridge U13 - 6

The giants lead all the way from the start and only conceded points at the end of the second half in what was a technically good match and a just reward for the concerted teamwork displayed. Dominic Jones scored the first try and Ben Sherlock followed up with two more line busting tries. Jack Swindells took and excellent pass on Ince's line and punched through for the fourth and Taylor Wheat under heavy defensive pressure
scored the fifth. Lloyd O'Brien kicked three goals.

Ben Sherlock was the Man of the Match with James Arnold being awarded the Coaches Award for his focussed and committed play throughout the match and the teams Top Tackler was Taylor Wheat. Back to top
19/11/2006 v Leigh Miners Rangers (away)
Leigh Miners Rangers U13 - 44
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 4

Hopes were high as the Giants put in a great first 10 minutes with most of the possession but failed to convert the time spent in Leigh Miners half into points. The home side then used their height and speed advantage on the pitch to score numerous breakthrough tries and appeared almost teflon coated at times as our defensive lineout struggled against their taller players. Jack Buckley and the other players who have
mastered the art of tackling around the legs did sterling work bringing down the Miners but could not make up for the gaps that were now being exploited. Ben Sherlock again excelled himself on the offensive and repeatedly drove the ball forward for the Giants but it was not until Steven Pilkington did a splendid offload to Thomas Hill that the Giants
finally scored some points against the Miners at their far right corner flag.

Player of the Match was Ben Sherlock whose effort and enthusiasm was an example to all, the Top Tackler was Jack Buckley who was commended by the coach for his excellent technique with the coaches award going to Thomas Hill. Back to top
03/12/2006 v Burtonwood Bulldogs (away)
Burtonwood Bulldogs U13 - 10
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 14

The Giants lead all the way from the start and maintained their lead throughout what was a technically good match despite the extremely strong cross wind and a just reward for the concerted teamwork displayed. Dominic Jones scored the first try after using his momentum to burst through Burtonwood's line and bouyed up by their early lead Taylor Wheat and Luke Gillooley followed up with two further tries. Lloyd O'Brien pulled off a splendid kick despite the gale force cross wind but the other two kicks were too far out onto the downwind wing with the ball stalling in mid-air both times and dropping vertically. Dominic Jones was the Player of the Match with Andrew Gilbert being awarded the Coaches Award for his focussed and committed play throughout the match and the team's Top Tackler was Steven Pilkington. 17/12/2006 v West Bank Bears (home)
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 12
West Bank Bears U13 - 4

Playing at Loushers Lane because of flooded pitches at Victoria Park the Giants continued their return to form and lead all the way from the start and only conceed points towards the end of the second half in what was a technically good match despite the atrociously muddy conditions and a just reward for the concerted and focused teamwork displayed. Andrew Gilbert scored the first try and Lloyd O'Brien followed up with a third line-busting try from Steven Pilkington. The Giants defensive lineout stood firm against the Bears slightly predictable play and was only caught out twice when their number 13 broke through to score their only points. The Bears second breakthrough play was eventually halted by Jordan Sherlock just short on the Giants line and was quite a nail-biter in the last 5 minutes of the second half.

Player of the match was Lloyd O'Brien with the Coaches award going to Sam Brennan and the Top Tackler Trophy going to Taylor Wheat. Back to top
21/01/2007 v Golborne Parkside (away)
Golborne Parkside U13 48
Latchford Albion Giants U13 4

Lack of the regular fullback and players in unfamiliar positions presented Golborne with the perfect opportunity to get some points on the Giants which they exploited to the full with at least six 3/4 length tries run in down the giants wings. Steven Pilkington scored the Giants only points early in the first half from a cross field kick. Back to top
28/01/2007 v Shevington Sharks (home)
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 18
Shevington Sharks U13 - 18

The giants lead all the way from the start and only conceed points at the end of the second half to tie. Taylor Wheat scored the first try and Ben Sherlock followed up with another followed by Jordan Sherlock and Andrew Gilbert. Jordan Sherlock kicked over a goal as well

Taylor Wheat was the Man of the Match with Thomas Hill being awarded the Coaches Award for his focussed and committed play throughout the match and the teams Top Tackler was Andrew Gilbert. Back to top
04/02/2007 v Burtonwood Bulldogs (away) NWC Cup
Burtonwood Bulldogs U13 - 10
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 14

This was a fascinating cup battle between the area's two first division teams that went into extra time with Steven Pilkington scoring the only extra time points to clinch a win for the giants. Jordan Sherlock had scored an unconverted try in the first half and the hosts converted effort had given Burtonwood a slender lead for most of the opening stanza. They added to this so the Giants looked to have a mountain to climb at 10-4 down. Dominic Jones thrust through the Burtonwood defensive line to score and Luke Gilooley converted to put the Giants back level in the second half and that's how the score stood up to the final whistle, forcing a pulsating period of extra time.

Steven Pilkington took a last minute in-tackle offload from Jordan Sherlock to take the win in extra time. Dominic Jones and Ben Sherlock both had an outstanding match from beginning to the end of extra time and all the players were commended after the match for staying focussed throughout. Dominic Jones was the Man of the Match with Luke Gilooley being awarded the Coaches Award for his focussed and committed play throughout the match and the teams Top Tackler was Steven Pilkington. 18/02/2007 v Shevington Sharks (home) NWC Cup
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 6
Sevington Sharks U13 - 18

This was a hard fought North West Counties' cup battle between Latchford and Shevington in which the score did not reflect how well balanced the sides were throughout with Shevington making the best of the penalty decisions. The Giants fielded three newcomers in this match Louis Gunwhy, Alex Higham and Josh Turner who were all commended for getting stuck in from the start. Steven Pilkington and Andrew Gilbert twice came close to levelling the score but were halted just inches from the Shevington try line in what was a well played and good tempered match from both sets of players. Andrew Gilbert was the Man of the Match with Louis Gunwhy being awarded the Coaches Award for his focussed and committed debut and the teams Top Tackler was Taylor Wheat

25/02/2007 v Hindley (home)
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 8
Hindley U13 - 8

Latchford Giants' draw against Hindley has assured their position in Division 1 for the next season in what was a highly contested final match of the 2006-7 season in which all the players put 100% effort into the match. Taylor Wheat was the Man of the Match with Liam Hanley being awarded the Coaches Award and the teams Top Tackler was Steven Pilkington

11/03/2007 v Ince Rose Bridge (away)
Ince Rose Bridge U13 - 22
Latchford Albion Giants U13 - 14

The Giants paid the price for some handling errors in the first half and despite a valiant fight back in the second failed to makeup the points difference. Necomer to the team Thomas Beddard put in an outstanding performance on his debut for the team and was accordingly nominated man of the match. The Giants worked overtime defensively with outstanding performances from Taylor Wheat, Steven Pilkington, Thomas Beddard, Andrew Gilbert and Dominic Jones in the absence of Ben Sherlock with Sam Brennan beating the others by 1 tackle to land the Top Tackler Award. The Giants freeflowing handling of the football was used to great effect during parts of the match when Ince failed to close down the ball. New comer Thomas Beddard was the Man of the Match with Jordan Sherlock being awarded the Coaches Award and the teams Top Tackler was Sam Brennan.

Try scorers: Liam Gilooley (2), Jordan Sherlock (1)
