Under 10 2005-06

25/09/2005 v Langworthy Reds (away)
Langworthy Reds U10 - 8
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 20

This was an absolutely perfect season-opener for the Latchford lads. It seems they have started off as they ended last season and look formidable. Hard work in the off season has paid dividends for the team. Both the defence and offence were on top form and as such no individual was singled out from this great team display. Several players made their official Latchford bow and all played admirably

Tries were scored by Cameron Jolley, Sean Withington (two), Mike Moye and Kurt Whiteley Back to top
02/10/2005 v Wigan St Jude's (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 8
Wigan St Jude's U10 - 8

Last season just two tries separated these two teams with St Jude's coming out on top on that occasion 7 tries to 5. This season is still in it's infancy but it was good to see that such a strong defensive effort by the Unicorns restricted the opposition to just two scores in total. The play of the youngsters of both sides showed the spectators they had the right spirit for the game. Latchford's try scorers were Sam Dobson and Sean Withington. Back to top
09/10/2005 v Oldham St Anne's (away)
Oldham St Anne's U10 - 0
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 10

It took a superb team effort by the Latchford Unicorns to shut out Oldham on their home ground. Whilst the whole team were outstanding special mention should go to birthday boy, Cameron Jolley who tackled like a boy possessed and made some first class breaks to fully deserve his player-of-the-match award. Harvey Livett dodged through half the away team to touch down a well deserved try, which he duly converted himself. Kurt Whiteley scored the second try after some excellent ball handling skills by his team mates. A thoroughly enjoyable match played in competitive spirit by both teams. Back to top
16/10/2005 v Portico Vine (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 24
Portico Vine U10 - 12

Latchford leant their visitors two players in order to ensure this game was played between two teams of eleven. It proved to be a very combative encounter but with hardly any infringements and no foul play. Mike Moye not only scored two tries but produced a try-saving tackle to restrict the opposition from adding a certain try to their tally. Latchford's other tries were scored by Sean Withington, Harvey Livet, Kurt Whiteley and Cameron Jolley Back to top
23/10/2005 v Shevington Sharks (away)
Shevington Sharks U10 - 44
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 16

A noble effort made by both teams in the torrential rain. Unfortunately for the Unicorns they encountered a well-drilled Shevington squad who were unstoppable and played at such a pace a tiring Latchford could not keep up.

The Latchford first try from Cameron Jolley came from a carefully executed pass to him on the left wing, where he preceded to run 60-plus metres to score a well deserved try. After winning the player-of-the-match award recently, Cameron is definitely keeping up the standard. Jake Upton's try came from a grubber kick through the Shevington defensive line, luckily for Latchford the Sharks fumbled the ball and Jake dived across the line with it.

This game's player-of-the-match, birthday boy Aaron Mercer, went straight down the middle, pushing all from his path, to score a well earned debut try. Is this a taste of things to come from this young man? Finally, amid the constant torrent of tries from the Sharks, a well-timed basketball pass from Harvey Levitt to Conor Jolley allowed the Unicorns to breach the defensive line for the last time. Conor pushed through from 10 metres and over the line. A great game by Shevington and for once an out classed Latchford team. Back to top
30/10/2005 v Westhoughton Lions (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 12
Westhoughton Lions U10 - 16

This was a brave attempt by Latchford as they tried to pick themselves up from their defeat last week. Two quick tries from the opposition left the team stunned. In reply Jackson Hall, one of the new crew, scored a terrific debut try. The Unicorns showed true spirit to go on to level the score by half time when Kurt Whiteley went over the whitewash.

In the second half the prodigal Sam Reynolds, who has returned to the fold this season, scored to bring the scoreline closer but Westhoughton were relentless right up to the final whistle and took the game by a one-try margin. Back to back defeats for Latchford coming after being undefeated for the opening four games of the season. However, this was a much improved effort and showed the regular spectators that the team performances are still going in the right direction. Back to top
27/11/2005 v Rylands Sharks (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 10
Ryland's Sharks U10 - 32

Latchford unfortunate recent run of results continued this week when they were beaten by a much improved Ryland's team. A good spirited display by both Warrington-based teams, saw the Sharks dominate both halves of play. Sean Withington managed to breach the opposition line twice but that was the end to Latchford's scoring ability today. The popular new word 'Bouncebackability' will be the watch word for the next few matches. Back to top
11/12/2005 v Wigan St Jude's Eels (away)
Wigan St Jude's Eels U10 - 18
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 32

Latchford performed much better in this game and were able to record an emphatic victory to blow away recent results. Sean Withington's work rate was inspirational and led by example. So too did Phil Judson who's confidence is building and, as captain for the game, his try was the pick of the game as the ball passed through several pairs of hands before finding Judson who ran it back across the width of the pitch to score in the opposite corner. 15/01/2006 v Haresfinch Hawks (away)
Haresfinch Hawks U10 - 16
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 16

What a game to start off the second half of the season. Latchford could have done without such a long lay off after having ended 2005 with a win to put a halt to three straight defeats. But that was over a month ago and it was to be seen if the Unicorns could carry on where they left off. There was no need to worry as relatively new players Jack Hankey, Mike Swanton and Michael Edwards put in good performances to continue their development. The efforts of Sean Withington helped bring on Jackson Hall and Phil Judson, while the whole team was led superbly by captain Sam Reynolds. Sam Dobson scored a great solo try, while Kurt Whiteley and Jake Upton both finished off good passing moves to score. Kurt and Jake also kicked conversions to ensure the even-sided game ended in a fair result, a draw 16-16. Back to top
22/01/2006 v Chorley Panthers (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 36
Chorley Panthers U10 - 6

Latchford were able to continue where they left off last week as, once again, these feisty youngsters played like men possessed. Set moves, individual effort, superb teamwork... the match had it all. Both teams played hard but Latchford definately had a win on their minds and this determination became too much for Chorley.

A professional attitude by all concerned enabled a good spirited, fair and clean game. All the team are recognised as man of the match due to equal effort put in by all. Latchford's tries were scored by Harvey Levitt 3, Sean Withington 1, Mike Moye 1, Sam Dobson 1, Philip Judson 1. Conversions kicked by Sean Withington, Harvey Levitt, James Jones and Kurt Whiteley. 05/02/2006 v Golborne Parkside (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 -14
Golbourne Parkside U10 - 6

This was an absolutely cracking exhibition of junior Rugby League by both teams. Up until the first try by Sean Withington the teams looked equally matched. Golborne soon went ahead however, with a successful try and conversion and took that lead into the break It was truly a match of two halves - to coin a phrase!

Latchford came back on for the second half in awesome form led by Mike Moye, who is really on fire this season.Tackling was hard and accurate. with Philip Judson, the smallest team member, easily tackling the opposition into submission. An outstanding effort made by this young man was supported by his fellow team mates. Another excellently executed try put Latchford back in front by 2 points after a break was made by Conor Jolley who gained enough yards to see Sam Dobson over the line easily. The final try by Cameron Jolley was skillful and justified as he sprinted past several of the opposition to ensure a well earned victory for the home side.

A credit to both managers and parents, these two teams exhibited a perfect game of rugby league, clean and sportsman like. Not one player stood out to credit them as the player of the match as its impossible to choose when a team plays with such passion and at such a velocity. They were all well worthy of the accolade. Latchford players should feel the upmost pride today as they have shown yet again, that they really are a force to be reckoned with. Back to top
12/02/2006 v Hindley (away)
Hindley U10 - 12
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 24

This was a difficult match for Latchford but the Albion lads' mature attitude did them proud in this very tactical, challenging game. Tries were not easy to come by but the Unicorns withheld the onslaught of the opposition and went over for four perfectly executed tries. Sam Dobson led the way, followed by our smallest team member, Phil Judson, who again played like a lad twice his size. Sean Withington finished off the scoreline with two excellent tries. The Latchford team played as one and are eagerly looking ahead to the next game. Back to top
19/02/2006 v Leigh East Mustangs (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 24
Leigh East Mustangs U10 - 12

The visitors kicked to Latchford and after the first tackle Sean Withington ran the ball back for a splendid try. Withington went on to complete his hat trick. Conner Jolley and Sam Reynolds also scored tries while Reynolds and Jackson Hall kicked conversions. The half time score of 24-12 suggested that there was to be more to come in the second half but it is testimony to both defences that there were no more points added. Sadly, with just five minutes remaining two of the Mustangs banged heads and the game was hastily drawn to a close while treatment was sought. Fortunately we hear that there were no long term injuries suffered. Back to top
26/02/2006 v Leigh Miners Rangers (away)
Leigh Miners Rangers U10 - 16
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 24

Unbeaten in 2006 Latchford travelled to Leigh with great confidence and it was not misplaced as a closely contested game was edged in the visitors favour thanks to a 100% conversion rate. Sean Withington claimed a brace of tries while Sam Dobson and Sam Reynolds chipped in with a try each. Back to top
19/03/2006 v Waterhead (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 36
Waterhead U10 - 10

Latchford continued their rich vein of form against a large and powerfully built opposition by standing up well to the challenge. An ethos of fantastic focused attitude and loads of effort drew praise from the opposition coach and it was good to see so many players registering on the scoresheet.

Sean Withington, Sam Reynolds and Cameron Jolley each scored one and converted their own try. Jake Upton scored two and converted one. Harvey Livett was unlucky to have his hat trick try ruled out but still bagged a brace. Sam Dobson was also unlucky not to be on the scoresheet but nonetheless a great overall team performance extended their unbeaten run to eight games Back to top
26/03/2006 v West Bank Bears (away)
West Bank Bears U10 - 22
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 12

All good things must come to an end and so it was for the Unicorns' current unbeaten run in what turned out to be a very hard game for the Latchford gang. After seven wins on the bounce a short, sharp lesson was learnt today. The opposition were physical and well drilled. Their defensive work denied Latchford more points and their attack was spot on. A harsh lesson for the Latchford lads but no doubt they will be back on form next week. Jackson Hall and Sam Reynolds continued their good progress and scored well deserved tries. Hall converted his and stalwart Kurt Whiteley converted the other. Unfortunately the whole team looked as subdued as the weather and very unlike the Latchford we have come to expect. Maybe it was the clocks going back or worrying whether they remembered to sign their Mothering Sunday cards. Not to worry even Super League teams get beat and some more often that Albion's Under Tens! Back to top
09/04/2006 v Widnes Moorfield (away)
Widnes Moorfield U10 - 18
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 12

Just one converted try was all that separated Latchford from this well-drilled Widnes outfit. However, Latchford were often caughtvery flat and will work on that in the week's come. Sam Reynolds, Jackson Hall and Phil Judson put in immense personal contributions and Mike Edwards continued his development into a valuable squad member. Harvey Livett scored both tries and kicked a goal, Mike Moye converted the other. Back to top
23/04/2006 v Thatto Heath Crusaders (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 32
Thtto Heath Crusaders U10 - 30

What could so easily had been a bad loss turned out to be an equisite win for the Unicorns in a game that came down to the very last kick. Thatto heath were a much larger and more powerful side and Latchford had to be at their best just to keep within touch of the visitors. The ever-improving Mike Moye made two try saving tackles under his own sticks. This enabled Latchford to counter attack through the strong running of Sean Withington who scored a hat trick and Harvey Livett who also crossed the white wash. Good ball work from Jake Upton, Kurt Whiteley and Sam Dobson enabled the Unicorns to carry the ball the full length of the field and set up Mike Moye for his second try, which levelled the scores at 30 points all. Young Mike dusted himself down and showed not a flicker of nerves as he kicked over the conversion to seal the victory. Back to top
25/04/2006 v Pilkington Recs (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 0
Pilkington Recs U10 - 20

This Sunday game was called forward to a Tuesday evening. Of the fourteen players who had played two days earlier, Michael Edwards was not available but Adam Harman came in for his official club debut. It was always going to be a formidable task to match the always slick Pilks outfit, but determination and character stood them in good stead and set the standard for next season. The scoreline is obviously one-sided but is the closest the two sides have been in all their previous encounters going vback to when most of the opposition were at Blackbrook. Sean Withington was the pick of the bunch ensuring well-organised go-forward with his attacking play. Back to top
07/05/2006 v Leigh East Wasps (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U10 - 32
Leigh East Wasps U10 - 20

It's always good to finish the season on a high and this is exactly what the Under 10's leaving their coach 'made up' with his lads. Prolific try scorer, Sean Withington added a couple more to his tally. There were tries too for Jake Upton, Harvey Livett, Kurt Whiteley and Sam Dobson. Jake and Kurt also kicked goals as did the sure-footed Mike Moye and newcomer Adam Harman who shows great promise. Kurt Whiteley put in a man-of-the-match performance in all departments and helped set up the win that will take the Under 10's through to Under 11's next season. Back to top
