Hindley U16 - 14Latchford Albion Unicorns U16 - 14
The first game of a new season is always a hard game and usually sets the platform for the coming season. This game did not disappoint. Latchford travelled to a rejuvanated Hindley side with four debutants, two of whom Mike Howard and Chris Green were completely new to the game. Both lads showed they were up to the task and made excellant starts to their Unicorns' careers.
Latchford initally came out like a house on fire and took a two-try lead, both of which were scored and converted by Danny Brown. Some sloppy tackling from Latchford allowed Hindley back into the game and they levelled the score at half time, 12-12.
The second half was dominated by defence, which was outstanding from both sides. Hindley struck first with a penalty to take the score 14-12. With both sides missing good attacking opportunities and the defences being on top, it took Latchford until 5 minutes from time to level the scores with a difficult penalty kick by Brown into the wind. Both sides had the opportunity to win the game in the last five minutes, but the game finished all square, 14-14 at full time, which was probably a fair reflection of the efforts of both teams.

This was another physical game, played in a good spirit. In the first half both sets of defences were on top, with Oldham going in with their noses in front with a 6-0 lead.
The second half was also dominated by both defences playing physically and giving nothing away. Oldham then scored and made the game 10-0 and all mayhem exploded for the final ten minutes of the half. Firstly Oldham kicked a penalty but Latchford came
back and grabbed two trys in five minutes to put themselves in the lead with the time ticking. To their credit Oldham kept going and scored off their next possession from a bomb, this was the final score of the game. Latchford took a few risks in the last minute and, as can happen, the ball was lost under pressure, allowing Oldham to gain possession and finish off the game.
The spirit in the Latchford lads was excellent, with every player giving 110% effort and never letting their heads drop. This was a very pleasing performance where all the lads can be proud of their endeavour and look to build on for the coming season.

25/09/2005 v Culcheth Eagles (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U16 - 22Culcheth Eagles U16 - 20
Latchford came back to playing after an enforced week off when their game with local rival Rylands was cancelled through fixture congestion problems. Next up were another Warrington-based club, Culcheth Eagles.
The game was nip and tuck throughout, as the score suggests, which made for a good game to watch. In the first half both teams sought to gain dominance, with defence being always on top. Latchford started brightly forcing repeat sets but failing to score. Then, off the back of a little Latchford ill-discipline resulting in three quick penalties, Culcheth
moved down the field and scored in the corner after exerting some pressure. This shuddered Latchford into life, after some strong running from the forwards and a general lift in tempo alround, Latchford got over the line to make the score 6-4 at half time.
The second half was a much more open affair with Latchford gaining the ascendency with 3 tries, one of which was most pleasing as it came from a pattern of play used on the training ground. Culcheth, determined to not to lose in this local derby, came back strongly and scored two quick fire tries to make the finishing score 22-20 to Latchford.
Special praise must go to Scott Rickaby in the pack for an excellent performance at Prop, against his old club and to the improving Mike Howard for another good display. Damien Lyon made a good debut performance on the wing in the second half.

02/10/2005 v Eccles & Salford Juniors (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U16 - 18Eccles and Salford Jnrs U16 - 10
This was another solid performance against a large and physical Eccles team. The first half was performance was built on defence. Latchford took the lead after exerting some early pressure forcing Eccles to drop the ball out three times and the game played almost entirely in the Eccles' half. This lead to Danny Brown going over to give Latchford the lead. Then, somewhat against the run of play, Eccles managed to gain some field position and scored a try, which changed the shape of the game. Latchford had to defend
a number of sets within their 25m zone, which resulted in a strong defensive effort to end the half.
To start the second half Latchford kicked to Eccles with words about expanding the ball ringing in their ears. After some excellent defence Jonathan Jones got the ball from a good handling move and bolted down the wing to score in the corner. Latchford were unable to convert the kick. Eccles became frustrated and conceeded a penalty under the post, which Latchford converted for a six point lead. Again the game went back and to, with both sides looking solid before Latctford scored again through Anton Mason, which
Latchford converted. Eccles never gave up and kept going, scored right at the death to make the score 18-10.
There were excellent performances from Smith, Brown, Josh Jones and from man of the match Anton Mason. Carl Litherland also had an excellent game on debut.

Latchford Albion Unicorns U16 - 22Oldham St Annes U16 - 27
This was an unusual situation for the Under 16s to be in by the fact that 4 players had to be left out of the the day's team as 21 players were available for only 17 places. The attitude of Damien Lyon, Chris Jenness, Jamie Sampson, Ash Pemberton who were not selected for the game yet still watched and cheered on their mates, even though disappointed, was highly commendable. The Unicorns were able to give Tom Merrill his debut and he applied himself very well both in the Centre and on the Wing.
Latchford in the first half came out very lack lustre and with the defence creaking and the slide non-existent. This gifted Oldham 11 points for very little effort. After some harsh words Latchford began to pick up and got back into the game with a try of their own. However, this only seemed to inspire Oldham who ran in a couple of quick tries to make the score 6-21 at half time.
In the second half Latchford looked more like the team they've been this season and performed a whole lot better. The defence held firm only allowing one more try against and, in attack, Latchford began to make increasing inroads into a tiring Oldham defence. The second half belonged to Latchford 14-6, but the damage had already been done.
Latchford must take a lot of credit for their spirited comeback and good fitness. Changes in the team did not help the performance, but much more application will be needed in future weeks if results like this are to be avoided.

16/10/2005 v Pilkington Recs 'B' (away)
Pilkington Recs 'B' U16 - 32Latchford Albion Unicorns U16 - 10
This game was more reminiscent of The Alamo than of a Rugby League match with Pilkington Recs 'B' using all twenty-one of their squad and Latchford having only fourteen players. In the first half Latchford started slowly and conceded the early try looking slightly shell-shocked after being made to wait on the pitch for nearly twenty minutes. After this Latchford started to play and there were many exchanges in this physical game at the end of which Latchford came out of the half behind 18-10 but still well in the game.
The second half began brightly with both sides exchanging sets of possessions and tackling well. After the early exchanges the numbers began to kick in and Latchford lost a couple of players to injury, each side had one sin-binned and so the Unicorns ended up with just 10 players on the pitch. Even Henry V would have been hard-pushed to be victorious at Agincourt with such numbers but despite this the Albion worked hard 'til the end and put in a good performance under the circumstances. Every Latchford player gave their all. The game also saw the return from injury of a number of players.

This was a superb game and a great advert for Rugby League, which produced good attacking play, some strong physical defence, and no shortage of creativity thrown in. Rylands started the brighter and went into an early lead. Latchford soon came back at them and brought the game level. After this, good defence and strong running was the main feature of the half with Rylands capitalising of more mistakes to take an 18-10 half
time lead.
In the second half the game was just as good with Latchford keen to get the first points of the half to bring themselves back into the game. From this point on most opportunities came via mistakes and the game ended 22-20 to Rylands

30/10/2005 v Waterhead (away)
Waterhead U16 - 20Latchford Albion Unicorns U16 - 4
For the third game in a fortnight a Latchford team were stood about wondering if a referee would turn up. This meant that the the game kicked off an hour late in wind swept on the top of a bleak Oldham hill more reminiscent of a Bronte novel than a Rugby League match. The intrepid Unicorn travellers were appreciative of Waterhead's hospitality and the efforts they made on the day in circumstances beyond their control. The home team managed to provide a referee from among the spectators who put in one of the better officiating performances seen this season.
Waterhead made the best of the adverse playing conditions early on, playing a more compact game and led 8-0 at the break. Overall it was a first half devoid of real attacking quality from Latchford, although Danny Brown and Tom Merrill did excel in defence, while Mark Smith filled in well at hooker.
The second half was a more open affair with a little more space as the players began to tire. Both sides started to use this new found room but it was Waterhead who were the first to capitalise when they outflanked Latchford to score out wide. In the last quarter of an hour Latchford started to exploit the space out wide, which allowed Jamie Thompson and Baz Styles to get into the game more from the centres. Latchford's efforts were finally rewarded with a score from centre Barry Styles in the corner. It was scant consolation as the game ended 20-4
Credit must go to all the players for their attitude and efforts. On a day with so much to forget there were still some positives to be taken and built upon in further weeks. Special mention should go to Tom Crosby who, in the second half vacated his usual wing position and filled in very well at prop forward!

27/11/2005 v Culcheth Eagles (away)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U16s 46Culcheth Eagles U16s 0
With this being a local derby and scheduled to kick of at ?High Noon?, the likelihood of a murder was high and oh boy, did we get one. On arriving at Culcheth the Unicorns were restricted to using only 17 players as Culcheth were carrying a few injuries. This meant having to leave two players out the game, something that goes against the coaching ethos of the Unicorns, even if others are happy to restrict players? opportunities. The players left out were Baz Styles who was carrying an injured ankle and Damien Lyon. This, combined with the team not having a game in three weeks due to the weather, served to motivate the Albion even more.
In the first half Latchford set their stall out choosing to kick to Culcheth and applied the pressure from the off. In the very first set Culcheth had to kick to get out of their own 22m zone. Latchford took the ball straight back and, after a couple of mistakes caused by Latchford?s adventurous attitude, Craig Fleming supported the ball carrier, received the pass and battered his way over from 15 metres out.
Second Rower Chris Jenness then crashed over for try number two. This was converted and Latchford had an early twelve-point lead. Then for the individual try of the game when Culcheth, who were struggling to get out of their own half, kicked the ball down the throat of Latchford fullback Tom Merrill, who returned the ball 70 mtrs down the touchline to score in the corner and again Latchford converted. Latchford scored once more in the first half through Danny Brown to make the score at half time 0-24. Although Latchford scored well in this half it was the tremendous defence in the forwards that set up the points, with the dominance gained up front the backs were able to play with impunity.
The second half went very much like the first in terms of points with four more tries scored from Brown, Smith, Jenness and Thompson. Culcheth never gave up and exerted some pressure in the later part of the game forcing drop outs on two occasions, but again the Latchford defence held firm. Latchford's main second half aim was not to conceed any points, which was achieved. All 17 players who were allowed to play did so with skill, passion and pride and gave 100%, right up to the final whistle.

04/12/2005 v Eccles & Salford Juniors (away)
Eccles and Salford Juniors U16 - 16Latchford Albion Unicorns U16 - 12
The grey and murky weather conditions summed up this game wonderfully. Latchford travelled to Eccles with a number of key players absent and others still suffering the lingering effects of the flu bug going round. On arriving at Eccles we were told the games were having to be stacked onto one pitch as a sewage pipe had leaked onto the other pitch, making it unplayable, this delayed the already put back kick off by around another half hour.
In the first half Latchford started slowly and went 6-0 down, but then seemed to rally and really focus to bring the scores level. The game ebbed and flowed with both sides completing possession and kicking on this sticky pitch. Eccles seemed to be getting the
better of the game when they went back into the lead with an unconverted try. Latchford
thought they had replied again only to have it ruled out for a double movement. With both teams defending well, and the pitch not condusive to fast-flowing football, eligible gaps were few and far between. The half time ended with the home side leading 10-6.
The second half was similar to its predecessor, but with a few more mistakes creeping in as fatigue started to take its toll. Latchford were still looking strong and came up with a try under the posts, which was converted to give the Albion a two-point lead. The game was still evenly poised and eventially Eccles scored a converted try after some sustained pressure and the benefit of some 50/50 calls that went with the home side. Latchford still had chances but were unable to break the hosts' defence again even despite being camped out on the opposition line for the game's finale.

Latchford Albion Unicorns U16 - 4Waterhead U16 - 16
Latchford were slow to start in this encounter and never really recovered after a good opening half from Waterhead. Latchford started brightly and completed their first sets of six tackles well as the game rocked back and to with both the defences paramount. From
a position where Waterhead were again going nowhere, a missed tackle from the latchford player and good finishing from the visitors led to the first try. Still the sides looked even and, if anything, Latchford were just shading the encounter when Waterhead broke near the line and managed to force their way over to make the score 0-10. As the half came to a close Latchford relaxed and conceded another try when the defensive line failed to slide over to support the wingers. Despite the one-sided look that the scoreline gave to the game the attitude was good from the Latchford boys who kept going and never looked out of contention.
In the second half latchford woke up and began to play, expanding the ball at every opportunity and taking the advice of veteran Open Age player Mal Mason, took on the line more. As Waterhead began to tire Latchford began to push hard and Danny Brown
scored in the corner, but was unable to convert. Latchford realised they were still in the game and began to take chances to force the game. They were unlucky on several occasions with the final pass and could not open the Waterhead defence again.
This was the first run out for about five weeks due to Christmas and cancelled games and everyone aquitted themselves well during the game. Sam Sinclair-Smith also had an excellent debut carrying the ball foward well and being involved in the defensive effort.

15/01/2006 v Pilkington Recs 'B' (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U16s - 18Pilkingtons Rec 'B' U16s - 14
This was an extremely hard fought contest with the balance of the game flowing to and fro, finishing with a try straight out of the top draw. Although Latchford had eighteen players kitted out in the claret and gold for this match in reality only fifteen were truly match fit. Chris Jenness and Jonathan Jones were carrying injuries but still pleaded to go on the bench in case the team needed their services. The squad was further weakened when Anton Mason was injured in the warm up. After some re-jigging of the intended starting line-up, Latchford still went out in buoyant mood and determined to not to allow Pilkington's to christen their new kit with a win.
From the kick off the visitors from St Helens came on hard but Latchford's defence was superb and held tight, even when camped on the thier own try line. Such gallant defending meant he Pilks players simply could not get the ball down. Somewhat surprisingly it was the Unicorns who drew first blood as they scored with a well-worked try from Baz Styles, which was converted by Danny Brown. The emphasis of the game switched in favour of the home side and scored again through the returning Martin Whitehead. Again added the extras. Late on in the half Pilks, under pressure, conceded a penalty near their own sticks and the sure-footed Brown made no mistake to extend the lead at half time to 14-0.
The interval came at the wrong time for the home side but proved vital for the visitors. The impetus was halted and Pilks came out firing on all cylinders in the second period. They quickly ran in three tries in a splendid fifteen minute spell of Rugby that had Latchford rocking. On their next attack Latchford managed to get bodies in the way and regained the ball in the nick of time. From this they were able to steady up the possession with the
scores locked at 14 each. As Latchford drove the ball back up field one of the Pilks' lads was punished for some impetulence and reduced their side down to twelve. Despite being 45 metres out, Latchford decided to go for goal but sadly it failed. Back came Pilks and set the tone for the remainder of the half with the ebbing and flowing of possession between the teams. The game needed a touch of brilliance to swing it in one team's favour and it was Danny Brown who served it up as he chipped over the defence, Mark
Smith gathered and gave it back to Brown who put through a grubber kick. Baz Styles collected the ball and crossed in the corner to make the score 18-14 as the celebrations on the Latchford line testified. Pilks fought hard to level the scores and, after what seemed an eternity, the shrill whistle of the referee concluded an excellant game of Rugby League. Every player on the field had given their all in what was a very physical and hard-hitting encounter.

22/01/2005 v Oldham St Anne's (away)
Oldham St. Annes U16s - 78Latchford Albion Unicorns U16s - 0
This was the archetypal 'Ground Hog Day', when if it could go wrong it did over and over again. This 'Carry On' farce began at Victoria Park where the players were asked to meet up for 10am for a 10.15am departure, only for the last player to turn up at 10.35am and the convoy allowed to leave shortly afterwards. Whilst on the way to Oldham, an exhaust fell of one of the cars creating further delays in travel. The 'team' got to Oldham around 11.30am for a 12noon Kick off, so not too bad. After a ten-minute walk to the pitch the game kicked off mins late. Latchford were soon in possession and in their first set of six crossed the line after a knock-on from Oldham. Those who those the pantomime season had ended were mistake as the try was disallowed because the referee felt the ball had been grounded by St. Annes behind the uprights - "Oh no it wasn't" was perhaps the appropriate response. Well that's about all that happened in the game really...
For those who ruber neck at car crashes or tune in to televised autopsies then they should read on as Latchford fell apart after gifting Oldham early possession from a mistake, St. Annes went on to rattle a further 30 points before half time unanswered by Latchford, who showed some woeful defence and very little effort and application for the
remaining period of the half.
Half time came bringing a chance to make a couple of changes and get some heads back on. This break just proved a slight hiatus in what was a incredable performance and one totally against the context of the season. In the second half Oldham turned the screw and ran in another 48 points with heads dropping and legs getting heavier and heavier, not due to the pitch, but the amount of tackling required in the game. The reasons for this loss were self evident and spelt out to the players after the game in graphic detail. Hopefully this will be a learning curve, from a very harsh lessons. The issues were addressed and remedies thought out, now to move on and come back very properly refreshed next week.

Recent results gave rise to pre-match predictions of a close game and consequently there was a large crowd assembled on Victoria Park to watch this under 16s local derby.
Latchford started though in their usual sluggish manner and conceded an early try. It was only then that they stirred themsleves and came back into the game, scoring two quick tries after some excellent rugby and good support play. Rylands rallied and came back strongly to score in the corner with a disputed touchdown. More fortune allowed a follow up try from the visitors whe led at half time 16-12.
With the game in the balance at half time each team made a couple of changes in personnel and reiterated their game plans. Latchford came out brightly and again went to the right areas with the ball to even the scores at 16 each. After an exchange of sets Rylands scored a well crafted try, due in part to some poor Latchford defending and a lack of communication. Rylands got their tails up and they went on to score another three converted tries in quick succession. The result with not representative of the whole game, but rather highlighted some individual errors and a lack of cohesion in certain areas during twenty minute period. Overall the Sharks were hungier on the day than the Unicorns

26/02/2006 v Hindley (home)
Latchford Albion Unicorns U16 - 40Hindley U16 - 8
This game was played in surprisingly good conditions for Rugby and for Latchford it was a much needed win before the Warrington Cup match vs Rylands on the 19th March. Credit must go to all at Hindley who came to Latchford with 11 players and were willing to wait to 'high noon' to see if the conditions were favourable to play. Hindley were the better prepared and took an early lead by scoring in the corner, but they failed to add the extras.
This though, was to be the high point for Hindley who came under increasing pressure from their hosts. Latchford began to keep the ball alive and this led to two well taken tries from winger Tom Merrill exploited the space outwide to show good pace and footwork to outpace the Hindley defence and score under the posts. Both tries were converted.
Latchford were now in the ascendancy and a third try followed to give Latchford a confortable lead of 18-4 at break.
The second half started with a few changes in personnel but this actually added to the impetus from the first half. Further tries came from Walker, Styles and Litherland with an additional four goals. The try of the game came when hooker Dave Walker sold two dummies to open the Hindley defence up, offloaded to winger Tom Crosby who drew the fullback and then passed back to the supporting Walker for a try of 80 meters.Late on Hindley rallied and scored again to bring the final score to 40-8. This was a solid professional performance and one showing the maturity in this team.
