Under 13's 2002 -03

Latchford Albion U13's 0 - 4 Orrell St James U13's
The first season in a new league is always a daunting experience. This term the U13's have moved up to the NWC 13-15 league. It's also a big season personally for the new coaching partnership of Andy Smith and Iain Fowler.

Their first game in charge was a home tie with Orrell St James. What a heartbreaking encounter that proved to be with the scores deadlocked 0-0 until the dying seconds when Orrell went over to snatch the game. Andy let it be known just how proud he was of everyone and Iain said afterwards that as far as he was concerned there was a player-of-the-match award for all the team. Back to top
Westhoughton U13's 8 - 12 Latchford Albion U13's
With Mark Smith away Martin Whitehead took over the captaincy and lead by example with a masterly performance and two tries. Tom Crosby's hard work in the backs was rewarded with a try.
They were backed up by Chris Jenness at prop, Calum Postlewaite and Kyle Dearden as Latchford registered their first win. Back to top
Latchford Albion U13's 34 - 0 Culcheth Eagles U13's
Latchford dominated this game from start to finish.
Tom Crosby's hat-trick may steal the headlines but the excellent defence of players such as the ever-dependable Martin Whitehead allowed the Albion to score unchecked by the visitors.
Other try scorers were James Bennion, Mark Smith and Tom Fielding Back to top
Newton Storm U13's 4 - 48 Latchford Albion U13's
Latchford continued the good work established in previous weeks to brush aside the developing Newton Storm. Uncharitable? Maybe. Comprehensive and efficient certainly.

A second successive hat-trick for Tom Crosby was matched by Mark Smith. Other try scorers were Martin Whitehead and Ashley Pemberton on his debut.

Mark Smith was top tackler and Tom Fielding was 'player-of-the-match'. However, for his outstanding all-round display, Richard Lynch was voted 'unsung hero'.

Newton Storm claimed a consolation try just before the end sending the home fans into frenzy, as it was their first score of the season.

Sadly Latchford, with six players absent had to cancel the next week's fixture at Rochdale Mayfield. Back to top
Culcheth Eagles U13's 4 - 20 Latchford Albion U13's
The U13's game with Westhoughton was cancelled and, as Latchford took on local rivals Culcheth the following week, the weather didn't look too promising.

With Mark Smith as captain, Latchford made a promising start against an improved Culcheth side. Kenny Turner scored the first of four tries and Chris Jenness stormed through for the second before the break.

Second half tries came from Tom Crosby and Martin Whitehead. Mark Smith kicked two out of four conversions. Dale Dearden and Luke Reading started well in their first games of the season. Back to top
Newton Storm U13's 4 - 26 Latchford Albion U13's
Latchford came back from an unimpressive first half with a strong second half that gave them their third victory in the last four games.

Luke Reading, Dale Dearden and Martin Whitehead all went over for tries. Ashley Pemberton, who kicked three conversions, was top tackler. Luke Reading picked up the player-of-the-match award. Back to top
Latchford Albion U13's 18 - 16 Rochdale Mayfield U13's
Latchford's winning streak took a slight stutter in the first half with some silly mistakes.

At the half time break the score stood at 0 -16 in favour of the visitors. After the interval Latchford came out fired up and scored three shattering tries from Martin Whitehead, Ashley Pemberton and Tom Crosby. All were converted by player-of-the-match Mark Smith.

Top Tackler Ashley Pemberton put in some crushing tackles to ensure Mayfield did not feature in the second half. Back to top
Orrell St James U13's 16 - 0 Latchford Albion U13's
The Under 13's winning streak finally came to a halt in emphatic style when they came up against a well prepared Orrell side.

The game was a challenging contest from start to finish and the team worked well but not well enough to get them over the tryline.

As captain, Mark Smith led Latchford well. Top tackler was Anton Mason. With good passing and tackling coach Andy Smith awarded the whole team with the player-of-the-match accolade. Back to top
Rochdale Mayfield U13's 4 - 20 Latchford Albion U13's
On a cold and windy morning Latchford's win warmed the visiting spectators.
The Albion cut up the Mayfield defence with strong runs from the forwards.

Latchford's try scorers were Chris Jenness (two), player-of-the-match Tom Crosby and Dale Dearden. Ashley Pemberton was top tackler. Back to top
Widnes Moorfield U13's 0 - 20 Latchford Albion U13's
Despite the one-sided scoreline both teams put in good all round performances.
Latchford came out on top with tries from Martin Whitehead, Ashley Pemberton, Tom Crosby and 'the new lad' Billy Sheen. Billy is a Service Area player who has transferred in from Woolston Rovers. A very welcome acquisition.

Top tackler was Anton Mason, although close behind him was Dale Dearden.
Player-of-the-Match was Chris Jenness who made many awesome runs through the defence. Back to top
Latchford Albion U13's 6 - 0 Rochdale Mayfield U13's
This time the scoreline does reflect what a close-fought game between two evenly matched sides.

Latchford managed to edge ahead just before half time with a Tom Fielding try converted by Mark Smith. That proved to be the only score of the game.

Defensively Anton Mason was again strength personified, ably supported by Ashley Pemberton. The whole team were worthy of praise but it was Billy Sheen who claimed the player-of-the-match accolade. Back to top
Latchford Albion U13's 36 - 8 Culcheth Eagles U13's
On a sunny day Latchford entertained a well-drilled Culcheth team. Latchford began as brightly as the weather and put on some fantastic moves to break down the resilient Culcheth defence.

Two first half tries from Tom Crosby along with others from Billy Sheen and Richard Lynch as well as three Mark Smith conversions set the platform. Even so Culcheth pulled back a try just before the interval.

After the break Latchford eased off the gas allowing Culcheth in again. They stepped up a gear with player of the match Tom Crosby adding two more tries and Billy Sheen another. Billy was also top tackler in this comprehensive victory. Back to top
Eccles U13's 24 - 4 Latchford Albion U13's
This first round game of the North West Counties Cup saw Latchford have to travel Eccles to face opposition from a higher league.

In the first half the home team showed their superiority by scoring three tries. It would have been understandable if Latchford had folded but that didn't happen. The Albion scored soon after the restart after a storming run from player f the match Chris Jennes. Eccles were restricted to just one more try.

New lads Phil Chadwick, Danny Rigby and Brad Atherton had outstanding games. Top tackler was Ashley Pemberton, with great defence from Atherton, Chadwick, Smith and Sheen. Back to top
Latchford Albion U13's 14 - 12 Westhoughton Lions U13's
Latchford didn't get off to the best of starts in their last game of the 2002-03 season and the Lions' pride must have been swelled by their 12 point half time lead.

A mark of the U13's season is how they've rallied round. It would have been easy have let this game slip by, after all they had only lost three of their 14 matches this season. Not a bit of it. From the restart everyone lifted their heads and pulled together, especially the defence who shut the visitors out for the remainder of the game.

Westhoughton continued to play well but their frustration was heightened as Chris Jenness and Richard Lynch began to open up the opposition with strong runs down the middle.

Latchford were down to 11 men but the numerical disadvantage didn't show as tries from Jenness, Martin Whitehead and Kenny Turner turned the game around.

Player-of-the-match was Chris Jenness while Mark Smith topped the tackle count. A great match to finish off a great season. Back to top
